Operation Motivation

So it is no secret that I have been eating horribly lately. It has been pretty well-documented on here. And by horribly I mean deliciously, but unhealthily. Very, very unhealthily.

This has mostly just been on the weekends. During the week I have been fairly good (minus last week, but it was Halloween and my best friend was here so I am giving myself a pass). I haven’t really blogged about any of my healthy eats though, because they haven’t been anything new or exciting, and writing about my oatmeal and salads doesn’t hold the same luster it once did for me.

Though you know I still love my oatmeal…

I still eat it for breakfast nearly every day.

Now, the eating wouldn’t be that big of a problem on its own, but I have also really been slacking on the workouts. I was pretty good all summer on the running front because I genuinely enjoy running outside in my neighbourhood. There are some good running areas, like the cemetery (I know, creepy, but I really like running through it), and there’s also an awesome trail behind my apartment. And sometimes I just run on the streets. It’s busy so the people-watching really holds my interest and makes me forget that I’m running sometimes (I only run on the street after dinner though, because if I do it around rush hour I am constantly dodging people in suits on their way to or from work).

So all summer I was pretty dedicated to the running thing, and I was running outside about three days a week. And then sometime around late August I started running only two days a week, which gradually became just one day a week. And there were a couple weeks in October (last week being one of them) that I didn’t run at all.

Also, and this is embarrassing, my gym is on the end of my street and I haven’t set foot in it since I switched my membership over when I moved. It is literally a two minute walk from my apartment and I have worked out there exactly once. I haven’t done BodyPump or any strength training really since June.

Both my personal life and my professional life were up in the air for a while, and I find when this happens and I don’t have a regular routine, I eat like crap and slack on being active. I completely lose my motivation.

Soo guess what’s happening. I am gaining weight. This is no surprise. Eating pizza and nachos and chocolate and candy will do that. I probably haven’t gained a ton, but it happens quickly. My pants are fitting a little more snug than usual and overall I just do not feel very svelte. I’m pretty lucky that I have a fairly decent metabolism, and I’m not as heavy as I probably should be considering the amount that I eat. But still, I need to put a stop to this.

So yesterday I decided that I needed to engage Operation Motivation. I am starting a new job today (I am so excited!!!!! More on that later!) so I will finally have a steady routine again, and I figure it is a good time to start up a regular workout regimen. And hopefully the healthier eating will follow. Probably still not on weekends though, let’s not get too crazy.

To kick-off Operation Motivation I was going to run outside, but sadly I think these days might be over…

It is freezing now, and I do not get down with winter running.

So you know what this means…GYM TIME! For the first time since I moved, I went to the gym. I ran 5k on the treadmill, and I would have hated every second of it…

But I have made an amazing (in my opinion) playlist that really excites me. I haven’t posted any of my playlists lately, but here it is in all its glory. You can click on any of the links to watch the song’s YouTube video.

Bohemian Like You – The Dandy Warhols
Burn It Down – Linkin Park
Feeling Good – The Sheepdogs
Heavy Ceiling – Said The Whale
Ho Hey – The Lumineers (thank you to my BFF for introducing me to this song, I love it quite a lot)
I Predict A Riot – Kaiser Chiefs
I Will Wait – Mumford & Sons
It’s Time – Imagine Dragons
Jump Into the Fog – The Wombats
Kill Your Heroes – AWOLNATION
Little Talks – Of Monsters And Men
Madness – Muse
Professional Griefers – Deadmau5 feat. Gerard Way
Radioactive – Imagine Dragons
Reunion – M83
Robots – Dan Mangan
Take A Walk – Passion Pit
Time Bomb – 311
Tongue Tied – Grouplove

I like to save the songs on my running playlist and listen to them only when I’m running, because I am excited to listen to them so then it makes me excited to run. It is tricky though, there are a few on there that I just want to listen to on repeat over and over again.

But yesterday it worked. I was excited to run. And I felt so smug and great afterwards. So hopefully I can keep it up. My plan is to aim for three days a week of cardio (so treadmill and possibly arc trainer), and one day of strength training. We’ll see how it goes.

Anyway, NEW JOB! I start today! I’m sure I’ll have more to say about it later, but I don’t think it could be more perfect for me. It is a Communications and Social Media Specialist for a marketing/events agency and I am just so, so excited about it. It’s full time, permanent, and it’s a 20 minute walk (or two subway stops) from my apartment. I have worked with this company in the past at my old job, and I have always felt that they foster a very creative environment in their office. I have wanted to work there for a long time, but they don’t usually hire externally. So yeah, just good things! This is why I really try not to worry about things, because I know, everything will work out. It just will. Though I definitely did go through a bit of a funk when I lost my job. I think it would have been impossible not to. I actually went out for lunch with all my old coworkers on Friday to celebrate my new gig. It was really great to see them, and I am so grateful that they are still supportive of me even though we are no longer working buddies. I will always have a special place in my heart for them.

I hope you guys had a great weekend! I definitely have some shenanigans that I need to write about…

Back to Liiiiiife, Back to Reality

And I like it!

It’s tricky getting up early again, and I actually set three alarms for myself this morning as I slept in a little bit yesterday (I guess staying up until 2am every night of your vacation and then trying to go to bed early the night before work is not the best plan).

But overall, I am happy to be back into the swing of things.

Walking into my office after not being there for two weeks was a really great feeling. I loved catching up with all my coworkers and hearing about their holiday adventures. Everyone was pretty much lazy like me, and also ready to get back to work. We all agreed that, while leisuring around all day sounds great in theory, being unproductive for too long can take its toll on you.

Actually, a lot of you feel this way, judging by your comments yesterday.

I also cleaned my office before I left it for two weeks, which I forgot, so I was pleasantly surprised when I saw it again!

It may not look the cleanest, but compared to how it is usually, it looks pretty good. I took a before photo before the hollies.

I really only thoroughly clean my desk and organize my office the day before any sort of vacation. I’m going to try to keep it clean, but I’ll see how that goes once things start to pick up again. You never can tell.

Being back to the grind also means back to Office Boccia! I tweeted about our game, and The Almost Runner knows what’s up.

It is, my friend, it is the life.

A few of the lads from Ontario Basketball (they have three teams, I have mentioned before – they are a force!) showed up in our office around noon to Boccia it up. It was a very important game, as it was actually the play-in to the playoffs (not everyone has a play-in, only the teams that sucked really badly during regular season play. Everyone else is automatically in.)

I talked a pretty good game, about how we had just been hustling everyone the entire time and we were going to make a huge comeback in the playoffs, so they better not get too excited about winning. But despite my trash talking (or maybe because of it), we were shut down pretty quickly. Even having the home court advantage didn’t save us. We lost 5-0. 5-0!!! We are an embarrassment.

Alligator Arms was no help, I will just say.

At one point in the first end, all the balls were around this random cart we have in our office, and one of the tech guys who works in our building, Samson, moved the cart to get a better look at where the balls were. We all freaked out and screamed “SAMSON, NO!!!!”

You can NOT move anything. The balls must be played where they lie. Even if they land in a garbage can (it’s happened). Silly Samson (it was his first time seeing an Office Boccia match).

Today was also our new intern’s first day, and her first time seeing an Office Boccia match, so we decided to let her play with us (that is not why we lost, by the way). She was pretty excited, and was all “I can’t believe you play boccia ball right in your office!”

We do! Well, we did, anyway, since that is it for us. We are officially out of the playoffs. Or we didn’t even make the playoffs. Whatever. I’m not going to be bitter.

There is always next season! I hope it starts in a month or so. And in the meantime, I plan to step up in my role as team captain and be more of a leader, so I will be calling lunchtime practices to sharpen our boccia skills. Unless I’m forced to resign. We’ll see how it plays out. Either way, I would actually like a chance at the trophy next time.

I have used that picture a bunch of times, but I need to keep the image of that trophy in my head. Eye on the prize.

Immediately after work I headed to the gym for some treadmill action. I didn’t love the treadmill today, but I didn’t hate it as much as usual so I think that is an improvement. I made it a point to really concentrate on the music I was listening to, and it really helped me to almost enjoy myself. I ended up running for about 40 minutes, which is pretty much a record for me on the treadbeast.

I only brought shorts to run in, and I didn’t want to change back into my work pants afterwards, so I just threw my coat and my boots on to head home and shower. As I was leaving the changeroom, this lady looked at me and said “Excuse me, do you have a sense of humour?”

Psh. Do I have a sense of humour.

I immediately answered “of course!”

And she pointed at my bare legs and said “LOVE. IT.”

I guess it did look pretty attractive…in the middle of winter…

I think my goldfish bag adds a little extra somethin’.

I did get a few of strange looks as I was walking out of the grocery store (where my gym is located), but hopefully those people understand that I was working the treadmill and not the corner. If not, oh well.

Anyway, I am outta here. But man, it feels good to have something to blog about again!

Hello, I ate a lot today

Well, yesterday. I ate a ridiculous amount yesterday. I meant to post this last night, but I am away for the next few days at meetings for work (please don’t let that statement give you the wrong impression – I am not a big deal), and I was having some internet issues while I was writing this from my hotel bed late last night. By that point I was too lazy/tired to figure it out, so this post is delayed.

I realize I have been MIA for the last couple of days, but not to worry, I am not dead! This week has just been a little bit crazy on the work front.

Shmanyway, last night a bunch of my coworkers and committee members and I hit up Frankie Tomatto’s, a nearby Italian restaurant for dinner.

I actually thought this restaurant was a chain, but I just googled it and it turns out there is only one in the world, and contrary to the above picture, it is not in Vegas.

Frankie Tomatto’s is an Italian buffet restaurant with 16 food stations, and I’m pretty sure the only type of food they don’t have is sushi. They have eight billion types of pasta, pizza, rotisserie meats, seafood, soups, salads, breads, pastries, cakes, ice cream, etc. etc. etc…. It is the craziest buffet I have ever been to, and a food lovers dream for sure.

This place is perfect for eating yourself right out of your pants, which is pretty much what I did last night.

It also has a lot of Italian paraphernalia hanging around.

is perfect for…

photo ops.

I would like to say that I kept my eating in check and refrained from annihilating the buffet, but that would just be a lie.

I started off innocently enough with a salad plate, but it was just a warm-up for my pasta plate, which did include quite a lot of pasta (and a little pizza too)

Now, you may be saying to yourself “where da veggies at?”, but look a bit closer.

That is eggplant Parmesan. And eggplant is a veggie.

I do typically avoid vegetables at buffets though, as I never find them to be that great and I can eat them any time. So I followed up that plate with a meat and seafood plate, and some dessert that went unpictured. This place is seriously amazing, and it was like $15.99 plus tax. Score.

I had to endure quite a few jokes during dinner, mainly about how I should be sitting on the end of the table for safety reasons (easy access to the buffet, and ensuring people do not get trampled), but this is nothing out of the ordinary and it makes me laugh pretty hard. More on the jokes later though. Back to meeting time for me!

And not to worry, I had a hot date with this thing in the morning.

I hated nearly every second of the 5k I ran, but I sure felt great afterwards. And like I might be able to wear pants again.

Back to meetings! I will catch you guys later!

Slow Death by Treadmill

Welp, I am pretty sure I will be having nightmares tonight.

Not because of my scary movie marathon the other day. Noooope, because I had the ultimate pleasure of seeing this mess today:

That would be 51-year-old Doug Hutchison dressed as his 16-year-old wife (oh sorry, she may be 17 now) for Halloween.

Ol’ Douggie-Pants has given me the serious creeps since his role in The Green Mile. I’m sure you all remember the greasy faced Percy, known for killing the cute little mouse, Mr. Bojangles, and for being an all-around D-bag.

Of all the movie characters I would like to punch in the face, Percy remains number one for me (the hunter who shot Bambi’s mom is a close second).

Marrying the 16-year-old Courtney Stodden amped up his creepy level further than I ever thought possible, but his Halloween shenanigans have trumped even that.

I have said it before and I will say it again, people are weird.

Moving on…

When I left you guys yesterday, I was headed to the gym for some intimate one-on-one time with the arc trainer. Sadly, all the arc trainers were taken when I got there, so I had to go with a back-up plan. The treadmill.

I haven’t ran on the treadmill since last winter, so at first I thought it might not be as bad as I remembered and I may actually enjoy it.

Not quite.

It started off okay, but two minutes in it started to go downhill. Basically this was the chain of events:

Fine, I exaggerate a little. But it was not fun.

It’s not that the treadmill is more difficult than running outside, it’s just that it’s so mindless and boring! I switched it up and watched TV instead of listened to music, thinking that would help keep my mind off the treadmill. No dice.

I don’t know what I’m going to do all winter. I don’t want to stop running. I like the way it makes me feel about myself, and I like what it does to my bod (running is the only exercise I have found that seems to keep everything “in check”), but I do not like the way the treadmill makes me feel.

I think I may try listening to an audio book. Maybe that will help?

Anyone actually enjoy the treadmill? What are your tips for not dying of boredom?

It was so gorgeous today, sunny and 16 degrees C, so I wanted to take advantage of it because I know these days are just about over. As soon as I got home from work I headed outside for a run. Compared to the treadmill, it was a breath of fresh air! I actually enjoyed it.

My little RunKeeper app came on at 1k into my run and said my pace was 5:45 per kilometre. Um, what? I thought it had messed up and had the time wrong, but at kilometre 2 it was about the same pace, so I checked to see what was going on and it was actually correct! That is the fastest I have ever run!

I had to stop at a stoplight around 3.5k and my pace went downhill from there. I find it so hard to stop and then run again, this is why running at a steady pace works best for me.

Anyway, I ended up finishing in about 29 minutes and I was so incredibly happy with myself. Maybe the treadmill taught me not to take running outside for granted? You never can tell…

Annnnd in other news, I discovered Peanut Butter Puffins.

I have never tried them before and OH MAN, they are good!

FYI they are:

  • 100% Natural
  • Dairy Free
  • Low Fat
  • Wheat Free Ingredients
  • Gluten Free (Honey Rice & Multigrain)
  • Cholesterol Free
  • Vegetarian

according to the Puffins website. But that is not why I like them. I like them because they are delicious! They taste like peanut butter Cap’n Crunch!

I topped some Puffins with 1% milk and a sliced banana and I was in heaven.

Puffin' Delicious

Pretty sure I’ll be eating this combo for the rest of the week.

And with that, I am outta here! I have a work event tomorrow evening and probably will not have time to post, so I am hoping to have a cartoon story post I have been working on completed to put up here. Fingers crossed!

Have a great night!

Cold Weather Running

Welp, these days are pretty much over…

I don’t think I’ll be running outside in tanks again until the spring!

Yesterday after work I headed outside for a 5k run, and it was pretty darn chilly. The temperature was about 6 degrees C, and though I was comfortable with a light jacket, I know that pesky colder weather is on its way. This morning while I was driving to work I noticed the temperature was hovering around 0. Eep.

I am not sure how much longer I’ll continue to run outside. It kills me to say this, but it may be treadmill time.

Running in the snow? That seems a little too hardcore for me… I am really in awe of winter runners.

Is anyone reading a winter runner? And do you have any tips for newbie winter runners? Like how to not hate it and also avoid frostbite?

It’s starting to get darker earlier also, which is always a bummer. I don’t mind running in my neighbourhood in the dark, but I do mind getting out of my comfy warm bed at 5:30 am and forcing myself out into the cold. It’s hard to remember how good you will feel after your run when you know you are about to freeze your loins (and nungas) off.

Last year I ran outside until about mid-November, and then I started hitting up this beast.

Silly treadmill.

Yesterday I did actually really enjoy running in the cooler weather though. I didn’t get too hot and I found it a lot easier to breathe, except my nose was so runny! I constantly had to wipe it with my sleeve. So gross. I’m sure I looked attractive while doing this.

I also made myself a new playlist, which kept me pretty pumped up. And just FYI, to keep me excited about running, I will try not to listen to any of the songs on my running playlist unless I am actually running. This helps me to look forward to my run, because I am excited to jam out to my playlist. Not a bad idea, oui?

I’ll add this to my Playlists page as well, but here it is if you are interested (if you click on the song title it will take you tot he song’s YouTube vid):

Cheers (Drink To That) – Rihanna
Color On The Walls (Don’t Stop) – Foster The People
Days Are Forgotten – Kasabian
I Like How It Feels – Enrique Iglesias ft. Pitbull
I Wanna Go – Britney Spears
Moves Like Jagger – Maroon 5 ft. Christina Aguilera
Reaction – Acres Of Lions (still loving this song)
Sexy And I Know It – LMFAO (Ohhh this video!!!! Kills me every time!)
Stereo Hearts – Gym Class Heroes ft. Adam Levine (highlight ;))
You Make Me Feel… – Cobra Starship

Food Stuff

So I’ve been really slacking at posting food stuff this week, but to be honest I’ve been really busy with work and I’ve been eating boring and repeat foods and I don’t really know what to say about them.

For example, for breakfast every day this week I have eaten either oatmeal with peanut butter and banana, or a whole wheat bagel with peanut butter and banana. Healthy and yummy, yes and yes, but boring and repetitive? Yes…

I love talking about food when the dish I have made is the meat of my blog post, but I don’t really like throwing it in as an afterthought, like “oh and by the way, here is what I ate today, since I have kind of identified myself as a food blogger and feel obligated to post this.”

That leaves me with a funny taste in my mouth, and I feel like it’s obvious when I do that. It also makes me less excited about blogging (obligation will do that to ya).

I like to give food the attention it deserves, but I also want to talk about the things that I want to talk about, ya know?

Sorry to be all ranty-pants, and I don’t know if anything will be changing around here. Just something I have been thinking about..

Anyway, cheers to the freakin’ weekend! I hope you are all dressing up and gallivanting around your cities! I’m pretty excited for Halloween festivities ;).

Enjoy your Friday!

I finally tried quinoa (pronounced keen-wah) tonight!  I have been meaning to try it out for about six months, after I started noticing it popping up on a bunch of health blogs.  I have been looking around Superstore for it for a while, but I never see it there!  I finally decided to hit up Bulk Barn, and there it was.

Hellooo Quinoa

I also saw this at Bulk Barn and I almost died…

Oh dear heavenly baby of sweetness… I could not trust myself to buy any.  I probably could have eaten that entire bin.

Anyway, back to the healthy awesomeness that is quinoa.  It is commonly referred to as a “supergrain” because it is a complete protein (containing all 8 essential amino acids), and contains a bunch of other vitamins and minerals.  It’s also gluten-free.  Feel free to Google it, but it’s good stuff!

I served it with chicken breast sprinkled with Mrs. Dash and snap peas that I sprayed with olive oil and sprinkled with garlic salt before roasting in the oven.

Quinoa Dinner
I was very impressed with the yumminess factor of the quinoa.  And it was super easy to cook, pretty much just like rice! (Shout out to my friend Dawn for pointing me in the right direction with that.)

This was a great dinner.  Even Alejandro cleared his plate, and actually packed some leftover quinoa for his lunch tomorrow!

I also stuck to my promise to mix up my lunch and get away from the salad. Today’s was tuna salad on a toasted whole wheat bagel.

Thursday Lunch

My tuna included celery, cucumber, green onion, garlic flax seeds and a bit of relish.  Andy-roo actually made it!  It was delicious.

I enjoyed my tuna salad with red pepper on the side.  I LOVE red peppa!

We also won a lunchtime Boccia match today!  Mary, my coworker Beth and I played against the Lady Killers, a hybrid team from Badminton Ontario and Waterski and Wakeboard Ontario.  It ended up being a close game, and this actually happened…

That is one of the trickiest shots in Boccia, called the snowman.  This was a sweet move by the other team (thrown from at least 10 feet away!), but unfortunately it did not help them win and we took the game 5-3.

Boccia Ladies

We had to get the measuring tape in there because we had a lot of close balls, and were measuring after practically every throw.

This is actually the second game the three of us have won this week.  Yeah, we’re awesome.  I think my boss will have to be benched for the rest of the season.

I hit up the gym after work for a run on the treadmill, since it is exactly one month until my first 5k race.  It’s coming up!  The treadmill was okay tonight (I completed 3 miles with a pace between 5.5 and 6.5), but man I miss running outside!  I can’t wait for spring…

I rounded out my cardio with 15 minutes on the elliptical.

Hurray for Friday tomorrow, and MARCH BREAK!!!!  Because I work for an educational organization I have it off work ;).  I am so excited. Leisure time!

Have a good night!
