Salad

Ever since I wrote the story about Darryl the bully and smashing him in the face with my lunchbox, I have been thinking about bullying. That was certainly not the only time in my life that I have been made fun of.

High school was fine for me, but not because I was “cool” (I was not). I just went to such a small school that bullying was never really a problem. Grade 8 sure was though. I was teased pretty mercilessly. Almost the entire year, and at the time I remember getting so upset about it. Though when I think back about it, it seems silly now.

The biggest thing I was teased about, was my salad.

I will explain.

My Nana makes the absolute best salad in the entire world. It includes the same ingredients as any old salad: lettuce, tomato and cucumber. Though she does also like to add entire cloves of garlic to the salad. I’m serious. She will chop cloves of garlic maybe in half so then you are just basically eating a clove of garlic. Maybe that’s why it was so good…

But what really made her salad absolute dynamite was her oil and vinegar dressing. It was just oil and vinegar. That’s it. But it was magical.

(she just used white vinegar though)

I cannot for the life of me duplicate her dressing, even now. It will never taste like hers. Maybe her secret ingredient was love, I do not know. But that dressing, I could drink a bottle of it on its own. It was just so amazing. I loved it so much.

So my mom knew that I loved my Nana’s salad, and when she packed my lunch for me, she would make the salad and try to duplicate the dressing. It was very thoughtful of her (even though her dressing still wasn’t quite my Nana’s, but no one’s is).

I loved the salad, and I appreciated her making it for me and packing my lunch. But the dressing turned into a problem. She would put the dressing on the salad, in a container, and then put the container in my lunchbox. And no matter what container she used, or how tight the lid was, the container would inevitably leak. It would leak through my lunchbox and into my school bag, and sometimes onto my jacket. I would just smell like vinegar all day long.

And what does white vinegar smell like?

White vinegar, my friends, smells like pre-pubescent body odour. It smells like BO.

So, I smelled like BO. And this fact was not lost on the kids I went to school with.

And of course I tried to explain myself. Because it was absolutely NOT BO.

But I know even now how ridiculous it sounds to blame your BO on your salad. Suuuuuuure it was my salad. Of course no one believed me.

At first everyone just started calling me “BO”, but I was so adamant that it was my salad, the name changed to just “Salad”.

I would try to tell my mom no. Pack me a different lunch. I don’t want the salad!

It was ridiculous. But I eventually convinced her to just go back to packing me peanut butter and jam sandwiches.

But the name stuck for the entire year. And I’ll never forget it. Good times. I’m lucky I don’t have a salad complex now, but I still love it!

Anyway, parents, just a lesson for you. Don’t pack your kids salad with a vinegar dressing for lunch. It is just a bad idea.

Feeling Thankful Friday

Hellooo you cheeky minxes.

It’s Friday, and I am thankful for the weekend.

Actually, I found myself feeling thankful for a lot of things throughout the day today.

First of all, I am so thankful for all of your comments on my cartoon post yesterday about almost getting arrested for “sneaking” on the subway. Those drawings do take a lot of time, and sometimes I wonder when I hit Publish if I am the only person who will find them funny. I obviously find that story really funny, but with those types of things, I wonder if it’s a “you had to be there” kind of funny.

So thank you for commenting, and saying that you laughed :) . It seriously made my day. I wondered if maybe you were all just humouring me, and you didn’t find it that funny…but then I heard my boss killing himself laughing in his office this afternoon so I went to investigate, and he was reading that post. So I was thankful that I heard someone’s reaction to it, and it was everything I hoped it would be.

I am thankful that all of my coworkers eat really healthily, and we don’t have junk food lying around on a daily basis to tempt me.

But I am also thankful for coworkers birthdays, and the treats that come along with them.

I am thankful for honey dip doughnuts (my FAVE!), and I am thankful that even though I am 28, I am not too mature to make my doughnut into a honey dip mustache for my own amusement.

I am thankful for office boccia ball, and the exhibition game we played today at lunchtime that helped break up my day. It was a lot of fun.

I was not thankful that my team lost.

I am thankful that I heard about a new group that has formed in my building called the Cookie Club, where we get together every Friday in a fellow Provincial Sport Organization’s office, hang out for 20 minutes or so, and eat cookies. Um, sounds like my kind of club for sure.

I was thankful for that delicious lemon shortbread cookie that one of the girls from Softball Ontario made (look, it’s a softball cookie!). So, so good.

Whoever’s office has been designated as the meeting place that week (it rotates around), is in charge of making the cookies, and I am thankful that everyone has signed up to host until mid-January. So until then, all I have to do is show up and eat cookies.

And I am thankful that I don’t know the people in the Cookie Club very well yet, and they don’t know about my blog, so they don’t know that I am a cookie monster and I am going to show up and eat all their cookies. Muahahaha.

I am thankful for BodyPump. I ate two giant cupcakes and a cookie yesterday, three cookies and a doughnut and a half today, and was feeling a little blech, but BodyPump this evening made me feel healthy and strong.

Fiiiiiine, not quite.

I am thankful for Druxy’s salads!

Ohh how I love them. Perfect lunch.

I am thankful that I have a really busy day tomorrow, so I can feel absolutely zero guilt about laying around in my sweatpants tonight with a glass of red wine and watching movies.

And I am off to get started on that, so I hope you all enjoy your evening!

Anything in particular you are feeling thankful about today?

Meatless Monday (feat. Black Bean Burritos)

Hey hey!

So first things first, a lot of you had questions about the big Running Date, and I responded to most in the comments, but I don’t know if you’re alerted if I respond to your comment, so I thought I’d answer them here as well.

I had never heard of The Running Date, or anything like it (except for The Amazing Race), and only found out about it through Sam’s giveaway at Health, Happiness and Skinny Jeans. As soon as I read about it, I wanted to do it! To be honest though, if I didn’t win the tickets I probably wouldn’t have. But I am so glad I did! I’d definitely do it again.

We also found out that The Running Date was put on by a group of university students, and this was the first year it had been done. It was their idea, and they found sponsors, roped volunteers into helping out, and ran the entire thing. I was surprised when I heard this because it was very well organized (not that I expected it to not be well organized, but it was very “official” feeling – hello race bibs!).

They had volunteers at each location to record the time you arrived there and to guide you through the challenge (and make sure you actually completed it and didn’t cheat!). They also gave you a little souvenir to take back with you, which you had to hand in when you got to the finish line. This is how they knew you hit every check point.

Registration was $40 per person, so $80 a couple. You could register online in advance, or in person the day of the event.

Also, I just checked their Facebook page, and they have all the teams ranked…and yeah, we came dead last. Haha.

But I certainly felt like a winner :) .

Meatless Monday

Welp, it’s Monday, so this means I am back to my regular eating after a weekend of snack attacks. We had some friends over on Saturday night, and after a few bevvies I got into the chips, hardcore (why does this always happen?).

We had Cool Ranch Doritos and Miss Vickies Sea Salt and Malt Vinegar, and someone (probably Andrew) pointed out how amazing the two chips were when you ate them together. Don’t even try this, it is so addicting. This is why I do not usually keep chips in our house. I can eat an entire bag, no problem.

Luckily I squeezed in a couple other workouts this weekend besides The Running Date on Saturday: BodyPump on Friday night, and a 4k run yesterday afternoon. But I am happily back to the healthy grind today in the eating department.

My eats included a peanut butter and sliced banana on a toasted whole wheat bagel for breakfast, and a big ol’ salad from Druxy’s for lunch.

Druxy's is de Best

I was in a meeting all day long today, so at lunchtime we all went down to Druxy’s to grab a little somethin’. Everyone was amazed at the Druxy’s salad selection. I love that you can grab a HUGE Druxy’s salad for $6, and you can include protein like hard-boiled eggs, seeds, and nuts for no extra charge (chicken and tuna are an extra $2).

I packed my salad full of almost all the available veggies, feta cheese, eggs, pepitas and sunflower seeds, and it was darn good.

Giant Salad

For dinner tonight I wanted something that I could just throw together quickly. Enter black bean burritos!

Burrrrritos!

These were really easy, and really good. But I changed them up a bit from the last time, and added some more veggies to the mix.

As I have been noticing lately with meatless dishes that include beans, the burritos tasted meaty without including meat!

Even Andy-pants said “These are delicious for not having any meat in them. Actually, I take that back. They are just delicious.”

He is a big meat lover, so that is definitely a compliment.

I sprinkled those babies with cheese and dug in!

Cheesy Burrito

Yumballs.

I am just noticing that my Monday today was meatless! I am not planning on becoming a vegetarian, but I am trying to cut back on meat and try out other sources of protein. Meat is expensive! Especially if you buy organic, grass-fed or free-range, and I usually do not unless it is on sale. I know I should, but I just can’t justify the extra cost. It is already nearly $10 for two regular chicken breasts. It’s ridiculous.

Here is the recipe if you want to try ‘em out!

Black Bean Burritos

Ingredients

  • 4 whole wheat tortillas
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 1 red bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 cup frozen corn (I cooked mine in the microwave first)
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 can black beans, rinsed and drained
  • 1 cup salsa
  • cheddar cheese

Directions

  1. Wrap tortillas in foil and place in oven heated to 350 degrees F. Bake for 15 minutes or until heated through.
  2. Spray skillet with cooking spray and heat to medium. Place onion, red pepper, and garlic in skillet, cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Pour beans and corn into skillet, cook additional 3 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  3. Add salsa to veggie mixture, cook until heated through (1-2 minutes).
  4. Spoon mixture evenly down center of warmed tortilla, add cheese, and roll tortillas up.
  5. EAT!!!

Pretty sure these are going to be a new staple dinner around herrrre.

Question of the day:

  • Do you buy organic meat? Why or why not?

Chatterpaul’s Birthday Celebration

Good morning!

I never got around to posting yesterday, as I was a busy beaver at work all day and had a date with my high school friends in the evening. And then my internet was being a big jerk when I finally did sit down to write about my adventures in eating last night, so I aborted that mission.

But here I am! And it is recap time.

We had a small meeting yesterday in our office, which I wasn’t in, but instead of ordering lunch, the meeting gang headed downstairs to Druxy’s and you better believe I tagged along.

I mixed up my usual salad order and decided to go for a sandwich. I rave on about Druxy’s salads all the time, so it should be noted that their sandwiches are equally as impressive. I opted for a chicken sandwich on a kaiser with lettuce, tomato, cucumber, green pepper, red onion, swiss cheese, mustard, and a bit of mayo. I also scored a pickle and a small cup of potato salad (which comes free with the sandwich) on the side.

All very yummy. That sandwich was dang good, and reminded me that there is more to Druxy’s (and to life) than just salads.

After lunch, we enjoyed some surprise afternoon cuteness in the form of my office BFF Lexy who dropped by with her baby Hudson.

Hudson is getting so big and is SO. CUTE.

Look at that little muffin. I want to squeeze him for hours.

Lexy is pretty cute too. I love how often she drops by our office. I really miss having her around and it is always great to see her. And of course we all love seeing her baby.

This picture of our boss with that cheeky little cat pretty much killed me.

So cute. They are already buddies.

After work I had a date with my high school homies to look forward to, celebrating my friend Lisa’s 28th birthday!

Joanna and I with the beautiful birthday girl (in the middle). Actually it is her birthday TODAY! Happy Birthday Lis! :D

We talked about how we are all (sadly) nearing 30, and who is the first person in our group of friends to turn 29. And it’s me. Not for a few more months, but still! It is approaching!

We hit up a restaurant in Whitby called Chatterpauls, which I have never been to before, but I keep hearing great things about. It is a little bit on the expensive side (about $20-$50 per entrée), but I keep hearing that the food is to die for, so I was anxious to try it out.

While we waited for our entrées, our server brought us each a little appetizer to try.

That would be grilled zucchini topped with a bruschetta mix. I am not a big zucchini eater, but let me tell you that will be changing right now. That was the best little piece of zucchini I have ever eaten, and I don’t think it would be tricky to recreate this little appetizer at all. Though mine would probably not be as tasty…

It also happened to be $4.99 martini night, so in a change from my usual beer or wine order, I opted for a Euphoric Sunset martini.

I don’t even remember what was in that (besides coconut and peach schnapps)…but I do remember that it was GOOD!

For my entrée I chose the Chattercake and Greens, which was a crab cake consisting of lump crab cake, vegetables and spices, served atop a mix of fennel, pineapple, tomatoes, pepitas and flax seeds with a pineapple mango chutney.

That crab cake was ridiculous. So, so good. I can’t rave on too much about the rest of the dish, because it really was just a salad (though a good one) and I found myself wishing I ordered pasta or something more substantial than just greens.

Like this dish for example:

White roughy served on top of pasta, which is what the birthday girl and a few others ordered. I had a bite of Lisa’s and it was delicious! I regretted my entrée decision slightly (hate when that happens)…but, that’s what I get for ordering a salad.

After our meals we had birthday cake to look forward to!

Isn’t the cake (and the birthday girl) gorgeous?

One of the prettiest cakes I have ever seen. It just looked like a big ball of deliousness.

And it definitely delivered in the delicious department.

That’s chocolate with whipped cream AND buttercream icing! I was in heaven.

It was a fun evening out with my gals.

We have all been getting together more often lately, and I am loving it.

Gotta go yo, it is work time! I hope you all have a great almost Friday! Hooray for short weeks :) .

(Un)horrible Bosses

I definitely stayed up way past my school night bedtime last night watching The Walking Dead. It is a pretty crazy show, and A-Rod and I finished the entire season. We just couldn’t stop! There are only 6 episodes in the first season though. Six awesome episodes full of awesome zombies.

Normally I’d post a pic right here, but they are kind of disturbing zombie images and I don’t have a disclaimer…

I was a bit on the tired side today, and maybe looked like a zombie myself…but at least my office was quiet.

My Executive Director (boss) and coworker are away at a conference in Newfoundland (lucky) for the rest of the week, and having them out of the office seriously changes our office dynamic. We only have five full-time staff (and four part-time retired teacher-coaches who drop in sometimes, but don’t have office space), so it’s very noticeable when two are missing.

I love working in such a small office environment. You get to know everyone really well, and I consider them my office family.

Office Fam (from a couple years ago)

Seriously, sometimes I feel like my boss is my dad. Yesterday when he was leaving, he was all “and you can call my cell phone if you need anything, and here is the hotel we’re staying in, and here is our schedule…” and I asked “Can you leave us money for pizza?” (he didn’t :( )

These little interactions make me actually enjoy coming into work every day. Also, since we work for a non-profit, everyone genuinely cares about their job and the organization, which is refreshing.

Especially my boss. I have never really experienced having a horrible boss, but my current boss definitely takes the cake in the awesome boss department. I honestly cannot say enough about him. He is a hard worker, cares about our organization, and most importantly, cares about the employees.

During my last performance review he told me that what he truly wants for me is to learn and grow in the job. He doesn’t want me to ever feel like I just come into work, do my basic job, and go home. He wants me to feel fulfilled, inspired, and passionate about my work. He is all about learning experiences.

He said something along the lines of “I want to hear about what you’re doing several years from now, and be able to say ‘look at where she is now, look how far she’s come’.”

How amazing is that? No previous boss of mine has ever said that to me.

He has a great sense of humour also, and is easy to joke around with. Obviously we have fun too (and you can check out this post for examples of that).

Or you can just check out this picture:

That is not my boss, that is Lord Byron in his castle of boxes that we built around his desk, but my boss was definitely in on this.

Anyway, onto other things…

Like dinner!

McD's Salad

Yeah, that’s a McDonalds salad. People hate on McDonalds (and as they should, greasy double QP-eezies with cheezies are no good), but I don’t mind their salads. This is the grilled chicken Southwest salad, and with black beans, corn, peppers, and onions, it isn’t bad on the veggie front. I “healthified” it up slightly by using my own dressing instead of their creamy calorie-packed one, and I avoided putting their little taco strips on top. But I kept the cheese, of course. :)

I dunno, what do you guys think? Is a salad just a salad to you? I prefer my homemade ones, or Druxy’s amazing ones, but I don’t think a McDonalds salad is terrible just because it’s from McDonalds.

Lunch was leftover Santa Fe Chicken from the other day, and breakfast was peanut butter and sliced banana on a toasted whole wheat bagel.

I am off to meet up with my high school friends for a coffee date. I foresee a Starbucks pumpkin spice latte in my future!

Have a great evening!

Questions for ya:

  • Have you ever had a horrible boss?
  • What do you love about your boss?

Busy but Healthy

Hello lovers from other mothers.

It’s FRIDAY!  I have never been so excited for a weekend, ever.  Working 12+ hour days will do that to you.  But thankfully my stretch of being ridic busy is pretty much over.  I’ll be busy, but not crazy don’t-talk-to-me-or-I-may-roar-at-you busy.  Today at 4:00 was the light at the end of the tunnel!  Phew.

And you know what I’m doing tonight?  NOTHING.  Not a thing.  I’m not even making dinner.  My own lover from another mother and I just ordered pizza, so I am annihilating that and then I am sweatpantsing it up and catching up on leisuring, hardcore.

I hope you guys enjoyed Dawnald taking over my blog for the last couple of days as much as I did.  New Orleans looks like a good time!  Although I will say, veggies looked pretty darn elusive down there.

Oh right, besides turnip greens.

I love healthy eating and the way it makes me feel, but when there is chance to indulge, I take it, so I’m sure I would have been all up in that beignet’s grill and all over those deep fried dishes.

On the reg though, I like to keep it on the healthy side of things.  And something that I have been thinking about this week is that making healthy eating a priority takes a bit of prep time.

I’m sure me talking about being busy is annoying, because everyone is busy, so this is the last time I’ll mention it.  But being busier than usual means things fell by the wayside for me, like house chores (hi dishes, I WILL do you), and keeping my office organized…

Trashed Office at 7am

I am cleaning that sucker first thing Monday morning.

But something that did not suffer was my eating.  Healthy eating is important to me, so I carved out time specifically for food prep and let other things slack.  Priorities.

Luckily I was still at home or at work, and not just OUT, so healthy eats weren’t as tricky as they could have been.  But it would have been easy for me to just eat out after working all day (um, like tonight), or throwing a sodium-packed frozen dinner in my oven, or running downstairs to the convenience store (yes, there’s a convenience store IN my building) at snack time and grabbing a chocolate bar instead of a healthy snack I packed for myself.  It takes a bit of extra time, but for me, it is worth it.

So let’s get to my busy eats!

Yog Bowl

Greek yogurt bowls with fresh fruit and All Bran cereal worked for a couple of breakfasts or a snack! (I made that one tiny box of All Bran last for four separate yogurt bowls.)

Oh, and PS, when the peaches are sliced up like this they don’t hurt my lips.  But since you guys were so darn curious about that, I’ll probably do a post on how the fuzz hurts me.

An easy work lunch:

Bagel Party

Cheddar cheese melted on a whole wheat bagel (broiled in the toaster oven, actually) topped with tomato, and sliced cucumber on the side for yesterday’s lunch.

On Wednesday my building had a hotel tradeshow offering a free Subway lunch, so I abandoned my packed lunch, ran downstairs for .2 seconds, made eye contact with no one, and just grabbed this:

I <3 Subway

A yummy veggie sub.  Oh, and a cookie…

And I Lurrrrve Subway Cookies!

Because I can’t resist Subway cookies.

And peanut butter smeared on a heated whole wheat tortilla makes a quick and filling healthy snack!

Lots o' PB fo' Me

Fiber + good fats = win.  I folded that baby up to make a peanut butter quesaDILLA.  Add sliced apple or a banana to this baby to amp it up even further.

And a big ol’ salad makes an easy, nutritious dinner.

Here's da Veggies!

Pretty healthy eats all week long!

But I had a big meeting today, and I finally went a little crazy and indulged ;)

Morning snack:

Lil' Pastry Action

x2, whoops!

Lunch:

Ginormous Lunch

Chicken souvlaki + rice + veggies + salad = YUM. FEST.

Annnnnd then dessert:

Dessert Time

I had to reward myself for all my hard work, you know ;)

Well friends, I am outta here!  Let the leisuring begin!

Have a great night!  HAPPY FRIDAY!

Questions of the evening:

  • When you are busy, do you find the time to make healthy eating a priority?
  • Do you have any go-to meals or snacks that you find easy to make when you are a busy beaver?
