All the Toppings in the World

So last night I was invited to a tasting at Jamba Juice and Yogurty’s on Bloor Street West in Toronto. I was pretty excited about it, as the word tasting was in there, so I was pretty sure I could expect to taste some deliciousness. Obviously I was more than down with that.

My friend Lisa works for rock-it promotions, the PR agency that represents Jamba Juice/Yogurty’s, which was great because I ended up going over with her.

It was nice to have a friend there. If I was alone I probably would have been standing around by myself all awkward-faced, and I probably wouldn’t have eaten as much as I did. I needed a partner in crime.

We started off the night of sampling at Jamba Juice, which I had heard of, but had never been to before. I figured it was just like a smoothie place/juice bar, and it is, but I had no idea about all the other amazing things they have.

Like oatmeal, my breakfast BFF!

This is my new best friend Dean (best friend because he is holding a tray of samples) and I with steel-cut, fresh banana oatmeal.

I was so impressed with the oatmeal. SO impressed. I sampled three different kinds: blueberry & blackberry, apple cinnamon, and fresh banana. All three were amazing. Like, ridiculously amazing. And I am a (self-proclaimed) oatmeal connoisseur, so I like to think I know what I’m talking about.

I never make steel-cut oatmeal for myself though, because it takes a million years (well, an hour), and I definitely don’t have that kind of time in the morning. I am all about instant.

Jamba Juice had a ton of breakfast options!

If there is one in my new neighbourhood I just may have to drop by in the a.m. for some b-fast action. And everything is under or around 300 calories also.

There were some other samples floating around as well, including possibly the best sweet waffle I have ever tasted, and a delicious tomato twist pastry thing.

And of course, smoothies!

Starting June 1, Jamba Juice is introducing Fruit Refreshers in three flavours: tropical mango, strawberry lemonade, and watermelon splash.

I liked them all, but watermelon splash was my ultimate fave. It really was refreshing (and the girl in the banana costume holding the tray of them was so cute).

After our Jamba Juice party, we headed over to Yogurty’s for some frozen yogurt adventures.

I was realllly excited for Yogurty’s. I knew it was going to be the highlight of the evening for me because I have never been to a froyo bar before, but I keep hearing about their amazingness. I think they are a lot more common in the US than here in Canada, because I see American bloggers eating froyo with crazy toppings all the damn time. I was always so jealous. I have been DYING to try something like this, but I know there are no froyo bars in my neighbourhood, and I wasn’t sure where to go.

Well now I know. You go to Yogurty’s.

This may be old news for those of you who are froyo savvy, but because I was not, and I know that most of my friends are not, I am going to explain it.

You choose your flavour of frozen yogurt…

Only chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry are shown here, but they had a wide variety. I sampled tart honey, peanut butter chocolate, Greek yogurt (!!!), red velvet, salted caramel, cotton candy, and a couple others that I can’t remember…

And once you’ve chosen your yogurt, you lay on the toppings!

The toppings are RIDICULOUS. I have never seen so many options. I was absolutely dying of excitement (ask Lisa, she said she wanted to videotape my reaction). I can’t believe we were even allowed to use all of them! I was sure there had to be a limit. I expected someone to rain on my parade at any moment and say something stupid like “now go pick your ONE topping!” I probably would have cried. But they basically said “Go to town!”

And well, you don’t have to tell me twice…

Sweet baby cheeses and all things holy and delicious… Isn’t that picture beautiful? The cup of amazing froyo looks like it is floating on a cloud.

And how could I not go crazy? I couldn’t. Not with these toppings…

For my froyo, I chose a combination of my two favourite kinds of yogurt that I sampled, red velvet cake and Greek yogurt (so impressed there was Greek yogurt, it was great). And for my toppings, I pretty much chose everything chocolate.

I ate the entire thing, and I felt no shame. But in my excitement about the toppings, I forgot something very important. I don’t particularly like a lot of crunchy toppings in my ice cream/froyo…I kind of prefer it smooth and plain for an optimal eating experience. So in hindsight, I got a little carried away. It was still delicious though, obviously.

But not to worry, after my first cup of froyo I went back for seconds (MUCH smaller seconds) of ONLY red velvet cake, and some strawberries and blueberries that I missed the first time…

I was so sad I missed out on the cookie dough and brownie chunks and the WAFFLES. Totally missed them the first round in my excitement over the other toppings. I wouldn’t have gone for the fruit the first time though, come on now. You gotta do it right.

Anyway, I don’t know if I can even put into words how awesome this place was. And it can be a low-calorie dessert (though mine was obviously not).

It was just an amazing night of eating. I am so glad I was included in this, and so glad the world of froyo bars has been opened up to me! I feel like a new woman.

I Love to Eat and Everybody Knows It

Hey guys!

Thanks so much for your concern yesterday about Winnie.  All of your comments lifted me up 🙂

Miss Winnie kitty is doing much better today.  I called the vet this morning and they said there is no need to come in yet since she is doing better on her own.  So the plan is to monitor her for a couple of days, and if she is not improving it will be a party at the vet.  So that is that for now.

Onto other things…

I Like to Eat

Yes, it’s true, I like to eat a lot.  You guys have probably already used your powerful detective skills and discovered this all on your own, but even before I started my blog, I have always been known for my love of eating.

It is not a fact that eludes my coworkers, and I would say probably the biggest running joke in my office is my love of eating.  If there is mention of food at any time, guaranteed some sort of joke about me eating will follow.  I’m sure you guys remember the lunch thief incident.  I don’t mind at all (it makes me laugh), and I probably bring this upon myself, but these little jokes are definitely something that liven up my day.

If a mass email is sent out about any sort of food function in my building, my boss will forward the email to me and usually say something like “Did you see this?! Free food!”  Obviously I didn’t miss the first email, but I like it.

Anyway, I was cleaning out my email tonight and I found a few that made me laugh.  They are always between boss and my coworker Brian.  Always.  Those two are the Lindsey loves food ringleaders.

Oh, when Doug says the Princess, he is referring to me.  I have no idea why…Brian started that one.  And I call him Lord Byron 😉 <- throwback post!

And then the next year…

And another time…

Obviously I couldn’t let that one go…

And then there was the time I won a $50 gift card for cheese on Twitter, because I said I loved cheese (and I do) in my Twitter profile.  For weeks I was known as the cheese connoisseur, and I would regularly get emails like this:

I responded in kind…

Honestly, it is these sorts of things that take my job to the next level.  I love that they love and encourage my foodie silliness and think that it’s funny.  It’s great.

As you guys may remember, my Office Bestie Lexy is currently on maternity leave, and her replacement Liz has been informed of my love of food and has already jumped heavily on the bandwagon.  There was a meeting today and afterwards there was a bunch of leftover cookies, so she brought them straight into my office proclaiming “These are for you!”

Cookiessss

Cookies fo’ me?  This girl is after my own heart.  She is a big gluten-free eater also, so last week when there was a free Subway lunch downstairs she offered to grab an extra sub for me!  Let’s not get too crazy, but this is nice to have around.

I should end this by saying that yes, I am an indulger, for sure, and I do not count my calories.  However, because I eat pretty healthfully on a regular basis, I allow myself to indulge if I have the chance.  I typically eat about an 80/20 split, I’d say.  80 healthy, 20 treats!  That is just on the reg, and may switch up.

Oh, and you bet those cookies came with a free lunch

Yummy Free Lunch

A big ol’ chicken quesadilla.  Probably cooked in a bunch of oil, and not healthy.  But you know what?  My lunch was balanced by a very healthy breakfast.

Bowl of Oats!

Oatmeal cooked on the stove with almond butter and banana, and I added craisins, and pure maple syrup at the end.

It is all about balance my friends!

Have a great night!

Question of the evening:

  • What is one funny thing your friends/coworkers make fun of you for?

Breaking Out of a Breakfast Rut (+ a Journalism Tribute)

For the last two weeks or so, I’ve felt like I’ve been in a bit of a breakfast rut.

Breakfast is one of my favourite meals of the day and I truly love breakfast foods, but recently I have been feeling a little uninspired in the morning meal department, and I’m not sure why.

Yesterday I just had melted cheese and salsa on a tortilla, folded into a quesadilla (A-Rod was all “Salsa for breakfast?!”  Why, is that weird?), and many banana-peanut butter wraps have made their way into mah belly.  I’ve just been feeling easy, and quick.

Today though, my love of breakfast returned in full force.  Oatmeal is my fave winter breakfast so I’ve been avoiding it for most of the summer, but this morning I decided it was time to bust into some oaty goodness.

He’s baaaaaack.

A little love from my breakfast BFF was all it took to rekindle my passion for breaky.

I topped my bowl of oats with Justin’s natural maple almond butter, a squirt of honey, sliced banana, and went to town.

Lurrrrve my Oats!

This breakfast was exactly what I was feeling, and I am already excited for breakfast again tomorrow.  I think I’m feeling eggs!!!

Fun College Times

Yesterday I was checking out the Elvis Impersonator video I posted on YouTube, and I remembered another video I posted wayyyy back in the day (well, four and a half years ago) when I was finishing college!

I took a three-year Print & Broadcast Journalism course, and I loved every second of it.  I loved the program, loved the professors, and LOVED the people.  I got really close to most of the people in my class, since we had all been together since day one.  It was absolutely the time of my life.

At the end of our three years, our big assignment for one of our classes was to make a multimedia video on anything we wanted.  I chose to make my video as a tribute to my Journalism friends, and all the great times we had.  I ended up uploading it to YouTube, and last night when I stumbled upon it, I called Ando over to reminisce about our good school times.

It made me miss school so, so much!  I miss being young and having no responsibilities besides school and my part-time job at Chapters.

Shmanyway, here is the video.  This is also where Andrew and I met, so you will get to see our love blossom ;).  I know it’s not as big of a deal for you guys because you won’t really know anyone besides me in the vid (I tried to include a picture of everyone in our class, although you may recognize a few from my blog!), but I still think it’s funny.

Enjoy!

I am off to a morning BodyPump class at my gym, and then Andy-roo and I have quite the busy day ahead.  Two birthday’s – his grandma’s 90th, and our friend Bri’s 27th.  I’m sure the difference between the two will be interesting…

Enjoy your Saturday!

Questions of the Day

  • Do you ever get in a rut for a certain type of food, or a certain meal?
  • What was your favourite thing about college/university?

Sneaky Sugary Lemonade

Good afternoon friends!

So I did it again!  Last night I set my alarm for 5:45 am, planning to run again, and this morning I awoke with minimal trouble, and headed outside immediately to get my schweat on.

I took a new route that led me through the forest that Alejandrew and I rode through on our bikes yesterday…

Welcome to the Jungle

It was beautiful and peaceful, but I ran pretty fast through there.  I got a little scared, as I am more familiar with middle-of-nowhere forest and wasn’t sure what to expect from a city forest.  Drug dealers?  Rapists?  I didn’t see anyone, but you never know who is lurking behind the trees.  I think I’ll save the forest runs for the afternoon just in case…

I’ve been running lately with my iPod again.  The no music running got old pretty fast.  Actually, I made a new playlist not too long ago that has been hanging out on my Playlists page, so check ‘er out!  I also recently became obsessed with the song New Low by Middle Class Rut, and it has a really good beat for running.

I ran for 30 minutes, about 4.5k, and arrived back home a sweaty mess and hungry for a warm breakfast.

Oatmeal, What Else?

My fave oatmeal combo of oats, peanut butter, honey, banana and maple flax seeds.  I’m going to have to start getting more creative with my breakfasts for you guys, but I truly love this oatmeal combination.  It is so delicious, and filling.

Stir it Up, Buttercup!

The morning runs are probably going to get less exciting pretty quickly, but I’m hoping this blog will keep me accountable to them because they really do get my day off to such a great start.  It is so nice to get outside early in the morning when the streets are so empty.  And it’s done!  My night is free from workouts!  Hurrah!

I was on my own for dinner tonight since Ando is taking a course in html on Thursdays (maybe he will be able to make me a sweet new website!), so after debating for a bit what to eat, I went back to an old favourite of mine…

Simple Dinna

I topped a whole wheat kaiser with a couple slices of low-fat cheddar, sprinkled them with a bit of garlic salt, microwaved the sammy for about 30 seconds, added deli turkey meat and microwaved for another 20 seconds or so.

Cheesefest

Easy and cheesy.  This is a go-to solo dinner of mine.  I also had about half a pint of grape tomatoes on the side to squeeze in some veggies, but I don’t really think that was a concern today, as this was my lunch…

Druxy's is the Best

A big dirty salad from Druxy’s, and one of the best salads I have ever had!  This bad boy included baby spinach, romaine lettuce, cucumber, broccoli, cauliflower, tomato, carrots, celery, red and green pepper, green onion, chick peas, crumbled hard boiled egg, flax seeds, almonds and sunflower seeds.  Seriously Druxy’s, I love you!  Best salad bar of life, hands down.

I had already eaten half of it when I snapped that pic, as the girls at work and I decided to eat in Druxy’s today and not just head straight back up to our desks.  It was BIG!  And guess how much it cost?  Five dolla.  I’ll stop raving now…

My preggo coworker Lexy added a Simply Lemonade juice to her order, and it looked pretty darn good, and though I much prefer to eat my calories rather than drink them, I decided to do the same.

Lemony Lemonade

I figured it was pretty safe.  Not from concentrate, so just fresh squeezed lemons, right?  So, so wrong.  Check the nutrition facts…

Um, Holy SUGAR!

Forget the calories for a sec and look at the sugar!  30 grams of sugar in 250ml (the entire bottle is 400ml).  I am no dietician, but I do know the recommended daily intake of sugar for women is like 26 grams.  Bad news.  And that is why I drink water, my friends.  If I am going to be consuming mass amounts of sugar, I want it to be in a delicious sweet treat…not in lemonade.  It was good, but once I realized I was drinking basically sugar and water I was turned off.  Not worth it.  I’ll make my own dang lemonade thanks.

Enough of that rant… But that leads me to an interesting quiz I found via FitSugar on added sugar.  Check it out!

I’m outta here!  Enjoy your evening!  I’m excited for almost Friday and lunchtime yoga tomorrow!

What is your favourite drink besides water?
Mine would be coffee 🙂

Sucker For Packaging

I am the biggest sucker for packaging.  If I see a product that I even already know I’m not a fan of and it’s in a sleek and sexy new package, I’ll think: “Oh hey, maybe it’s good now!” and then I’ll buy it.

There is a shampoo that I hate by Marc Anthony.  It makes my hair smell like a wet dog and feel like straw, but every time they change the bottle design I assume it must be better, and it lures me in all over again.  And every time, it makes my hair smell like a wet dog and feel like straw.

Anywhooz, the reason I mention this is because I was totally lured into an impulse buy today all because of the packaging.

I felt like I really needed something sweet after my lunch today (leftover frittata supplemented with a Druxy’s Tomato and Mushroom Florentine soup), so I wandered down to the convenience store in my building for a little somethin’ somethin’ (yes, very convenient, we also have a hair salon, a dentist, a dry cleaners, and a Druxy’s, as you know), and I saw this:

How sexy and enticing does that pack of gum look?  I was instantly intrigued.  Also, vitality, rejuvenate and luscious all on the same package?  Obviously I’m buying this.

The gum wasn’t bad, but for 2 dolla this is what you get:

Meh.

So basically just regular, clear packaged Trident gum.  After that attractive packaging, I was expecting a lot more, I gotta say.

I ended up nabbing a Dairy Milk thin chocolate bar as well.  And I was NOT disappointed with that!

Choco

I am pretty sure my chocolate craving was inspired by my chocolate breakfast.  It really stole the show today in the meal department (dinner was grilled vegetable and goat cheese pizza from Panago, my new fave kind!).  But my breakfast…it was awesome.  Chocolate and peanut butter oatmeal!

Looks...Good?

It’s not the greatest pic, I’ll admit.  Oatmeal is not the most photogenic food in the world… But although that looks like a big bowl of bum-oley, I cannot describe to you how delicious it was.

I made my staple bowl of oatmeal with my fave toppings of peanut butter, sliced banana, honey, and a tablespoon of chia seeds, and then I had one bite before deciding I wanted a little something more… I wanted chocolate.  I added about a teaspoon of cocoa and stirred it all up.  Cocoa, by the way, has only 20 calories per tablespoon, 1 gram of fat, 0 sugar, 0 sodium, and a gram of fibre.  Cocoa = win.  (Honey or some sort of sweetener is a must with the cocoa though.)

Chocolate and peanut butter for breakfast?  Oh yes.  Yes yes yes.  So yummy.

I am outttta here, it’s bedtime!

Question:  Do fancy packages lure you into buying things?

I already answered this; yes, yes and thrice YES!
