Campground Hopping & Halloween in August

Thursday afternoon my friend Sherrie and I packed up her car and hit the road for Algonquin Park for a weekend camping trip. I love camping, and I usually go a few times a summer. This was my first (and probably last) camping trip this year though, so I was pretty pumped for it.

Algonquin Park is about a three and half hour drive from Sherrie’s house, but the drive went by ridiculously fast. It was a gorgeous day, so Sher and I had the windows down, sunroof open, and music blaring. We sang at the top of our lungs almost the entire drive. Sherrie enjoys the same music as I do on road trips: anything you can sing very loudly and ridiculously to (a lot of old rock and 90′s beats such as Good Vibrations and Another Night Another Dream), so it worked out very well. Possibly the best road trip I can remember.

As we got closer to the park the scenery was beautiful. It was forest on all sides.

We finally arrived at Pog Lake around 8pm, and found our campsite. Sherrie and I quickly set up and started a fire, and started our leisuring.

Sherrie’s cousin Nick, his fiance, and her best friend met us there shortly after, and as they were setting up camp, two rangers in bulletproof vests came over and told us we needed to keep it down. Blowing up the air mattress was apparently very loud. Um, friends, we JUST got here. I figured it was not going to be a good omen for the weekend, but I have never camped at a Provincial Park and not gotten a noise complaint (they are very strict about the noise). So we dismissed it.

But we did listen at 1am when they came back in their vests and again said we were being too loud. And we asked about their vests and asked if they thought we looked like the type of people who would be carrying guns and they said “You never know.” Alright then.

Actually, as we were packing up the car in Sherrie’s driveway before we left, Sherrie’s neighbours (who are nearly 10 years younger than us) were also packing up their car for a camping trip at a private campground near Algonquin Park, and when we mentioned where we were going they were all “Good luck, you’re totally going to get kicked out! Provincial Parks are so strict!” but we laughed it off..

When we went to bed that first night I discovered why we were so loud. It was so silent in that park. There weren’t even crickets. There was no noise at all. You could hear a twig snap a mile away. So our voices probably carried and woke everyone and their kids up.

I also woke up at about 4am needing to pee so, so badly, and I immediately thought of my uncle and my adventures with the apple juice. I did not want a repeat of that situation (we had no apple juice), so I reluctantly went outside. And this picture haunted me the entire time:

I was terrified that a bear was going to sneak up on me and attack me at any second. It was frightening.

The next day was slightly overcast, and it did rain a tiny bit, so we spent most of the day leisuring around the fire at our campsite. We had ladder golf and frisbee cup, so we played that for a while.

And eventually we made it out on a pretty long walk to explore the park. There was a river just behind our campsite, so we hung out there for a while once it got sunny in the afternoon.

Pog Lake may have been strict about the noise, but it was beautiful, so we were ready to forgive it.

In the late afternoon, Sherrie and I headed into town to pick up her friend Alicia, who was taking a bus there from Toronto to meet up with us. Alicia had never been camping before, but it was on her bucket-list, so she really wanted to make it. Alicia kills me. She is so cute and at the same time very sassy, and her reactions to things make me laugh hard.

With Alicia’s arrival, this made five girls in our party, as well as Sherrie’s cousin Nick.

And do you know what five girls are? Loud. We are loud. We can’t help it!

We were all laughing and talking over eachother, and our voices probably just carried right up to the ranger’s station. Eventually the rangers came back over, and informed us that we were being evicted, due to excessive noise, and we would have to vacate our site by 9 the next morning.

This was very bad. We were not done our camping yet! Alicia had only been there for a few hours and she had only seen our campsite in the dark. We still wanted to show her how amazing camping was! I was really surprised this happened, because although I know Provincial Parks are strict with noise, I have never actually gotten evicted.

We didn’t want to just go home, so Sherrie sent a text to her neighbours, the ones who had made fun of us for going to Algonquin Park in the first place because we were probably going to get kicked out. She was all “We should have listened to you youngsters! Where you at? We’re coming to your campground!”

And so, at 9 the next morning, Sherrie, Alicia and I campsite hopped to a privately owned campground just outside of Algonquin Park. We got our own site right by Sherrie’s neighbours and friends.

It was the best decision of the weekend, and we all ended up being grateful we were there. It was MUCH more suited towards our camping lifestyle.

As we were checking in, the owner told us she put us by the back in the kid-free zone so we could be as loud as we wanted. And then she said there was a water trampoline that was more fun after you had a few drinks, so we should bring our drinks down to the beach.

I am pretty sure I turned to Sherrie and said “Is this heaven?”

So, that is what we did.

Sherrie’s neighbours and friends were already at the beach, so we swam around with them for hours and hours. I LOVE deep water lake swimming so much. It is one of my favourite things in the world.

Alicia is not a fan of lakes, and didn’t want to get wet, but we didn’t want her to feel left out when we were all in the water, so we floated her on a raft like Cleopatra over to the floating dock. She never even had to touch the water.

Alicia loved camping. I am just going to go ahead and say she had the best time of her life. We taught her how enjoy a sausage cooked over the fire…

How to set up a tent…

How to stoke the fire…

And many other camping activities. She was loving it.

That night happened to be “Halloween” in our new campground, which we noticed as we were walking and there were ghosts and cobwebs hanging from the trees.

And even some of the adults were dressed in costumes. Like this nurse:

In my years of camping, I have never heard of a theme night like this. The kids were going around trick or treating to all the different sites, and they had a haunted house. A haunted house!

Sherrie and Alicia were not down with the haunted house, but I convinced Sherrie’s neighbours and friends to go with me.

So here is our original haunted house crew:

The effort they put into that house was ridiculous.

The haunted house was in a hall, and they had the entire thing sectioned off into a maze. It was pitch black in there, had numerous things hanging from the ceiling, and volunteers who would jump out and scare you.

I loved it. I absolutely loved the haunted house. I ran back to the beach and was all “Sherrie, you NEED to go through the haunted house! You have to come with us!” and we rounded up some more people to go through again.

And Sherrie just happened to have light-up devil horns that she brought with her (she has learned all about props from my high school friends). So we said it was fate that we ended up there on “Halloween”.

After the second time through the house, I scored a candy apple that I dipped in caramel myself, and a bag of Doritos.

So I was a happy camper (literally).

I am so glad we ended up at that second campground. It was a much better fit for us. And the Halloween thing was just the icing on the cake. It was so funny. And I loved camping with Sherrie! We are so alike, so it was great to spend time with her.

As for eats all weekend, there was a LOT of burgers and hotdogs:

Jiffy Pop cooked right over the fire…

Massive amounts of bacon and eggs, and chips and nacho dip eaten off the ground, because we are classy like that.

Best nacho dip I’ve ever eaten.

And as for drinks, beer, beer and more beer. Since I have been home I have been concentrating on re-hydrating myself, because I’m pretty sure I only drank one bottle of water all weekend and I also used it to brush my teeth.

So that was our weekend camping festivities, and it was fun, fun times! Minus getting evicted, but what can ya do? I think it worked out for the best.

A Tribute to my Halloween Kitty

Hola!

You guys have probably noticed my little kitty Winnie pop up on my blog quite often, but I have another little kitty cat who definitely doesn’t get as much blog attention.

That black thing is Dexter.

I don’t mean to leave Dexter out, but he is not quite as personable as Winnie, and he doesn’t do as many things that are blog-worthy.

Winnie loves it when you pick her up, she just molds to your body and snuggles into you. Sometimes when I sleep at night she will let me spoon her under the covers and she will stay there until I fall asleep. She is the nicest, most cuddly cat ever.

When you pick up Dexter, he just spreads his limbs out all awkwardly and tries to get away immediately. He does not let me spoon him.

Andy and I have commented many times that we feel like Dexter is just this black thing that lives in our house, and we both feel like we don’t really know him. Sometimes we forget about him. He is just a background kitty.

And kind of a weirdo.

But that being said, he is a nice kitty cat. He does like to be pet and rubbed, but only while sitting next to you. He does not like to be picked up.

The reason I am profiling Dexter today is because Halloween is his day! Doesn’t he look like the perfect Halloween kitty?

I tried to get him to raise his back so he would look like a real-deal Halloween black cat, but he wouldn’t.

Just after Christmas nearly four years ago, Ando and I were thinking about getting a kitten so we stopped by the Humane Society to see if any kitties caught our eye.

Dexter was in a cage by himself, and he was all shy and tiny and scrawny. We both liked him immediately when we held him (he was actually a little snuggly as a kitten). One of the workers told us that they found Dexter in an alley with his brothers and sisters and his mom a few weeks earlier. She also said that they were all taken to Pet Smart except for Dexter, and they all got adopted. His entire family got adopted except for him :( .

We had no idea why Dexter was left behind, but we felt bad for him and we adopted him on the spot.

Could you resist that face?

He was about 9 weeks old then, which means he was born right around this time. Which means that Halloween could be Dexter’s birthday! Since we don’t know when his actual birthday is, we like to say that it is today.

So happy birthday to my little Halloween kitty!

We gave him a little treat after dinner to celebrate. And we didn’t even make him get dressed up.

Sick Eats

I am still not feeling very well, so I took ‘er easy today and worked from home. I wasn’t very hungry at lunchtime, but I knew I should eat something or my hunger monster would make an appearance later in the afternoon.

I made myself the typical sick lunch.

Sick Lunch

Campbell’s rustic spiced lentil and vegetable soup, and a piece of whole wheat toast with butter. I do not usually eat canned soup because it is so packed with sodium (this one was low sodium, and it still had a lot of sodium), but this was the perfect lunch today.

Not as good as homemade soup, or Druxy’s soup, but it wasn’t bad.

And Andy-pants made dinner because I was a big lazy sicko.

Dinner Time!

Boneless pork tenderloin that he seasoned with a garlic and seed mustard marinade before grilling, with sweet potato fries that he sprinkled with olive oil, garlic salt and red pepper flakes and baked in the oven at 400 degrees for about half an hour. He loaded my plate up with fries and I couldn’t quite finish them all, but they were gooood.

He cheated and used a bag of pre-cut sweet potatoes that I bought on my last grocery shop, which are still fresh and unseasoned, and I will be buying those babies again! Dinner was delicious, and even better because I didn’t make it.

My plan is to couch it up for the rest of the evening. I really want to be back to work tomorrow so I want to just rest up and get betta!

I originally wanted to go for a run just as it was getting dark tonight so I could see all the kids trick-or-treating in their costumes, but I realllllly did not feel like doing any sort of physical activity.

It would be nice if I didn’t have to go anywhere and I could see the kids in their costumes from the comfort of, oh I don’t know, my own doorstep, but unfortunately no one comes to our house on Halloween.

We tried handing out candy the first two years we lived here. We hardcore pumpkin carved and I bought the best mix of mini chocolate bars ever in anticipation of all the kiddies, but we did not have one child show up. This is really weird to me because I live in a townhouse, so the houses are obviously close together and you would think ideal for trick-or-treating…but we get shafted every year, so I guess not.

Anyway, so now we are big Grinches, and I didn’t even bother buying candy this year. I will be buying a box of Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups tomorrow though once they go on sale. For myself :) .

Happy Halloween once again! Here’s a throwback Halloween pic for ya.

Me in Grade 3 with my old favourite kitty Princess Missy :) . She was just like Winnie, and I miss her a lot.

  • What kind of candy are you giving out this year?
  • How many kids do you usually get at your house?

Halloweenie Festivities

Happy Halloween!

Can you guess who I dressed as?

Ke$ha!

Don’t ask me what Andrew is, because I still don’t know. That was a last minute costume for sure. Well, mine was also last minute, as in I decided on Friday (super easy to put together though), but Ando’s costume was last minute as in Saturday at 6 pm, when our party was at 9.

Ah well, he didn’t really wear it long anyway.

Pretty much everyone asked me who I was dressed as, so if you are unsure of what Ke$ha looks like, here is a reminder:

I was specifically going for her makeup look in this picture.

I think it looked pretty similar. It was hard to act like Ke$ha though, as she doesn’t really smile ever and looks pretty out of it most of the time, and I have a hard time not smiling and like to think I look alert (most of the time, not by the end of the night).

She was definitely fun to dress as though, because she is such a hot mess. Also, I don’t think I have ever worn that much makeup. My eyelids felt like they weighed 30 pounds.

We went to a great Halloween party hosted by friends, and there were many awesome costumes in attendance.

From left: figure skater, Dottie from A League of Their Own, Lindsay Lohan (haha), Luigi, Ke$ha, a kitty cat, and a nun.

You may recognize my friends Bri (Luigi) and Leah (nun), who have popped up on my blog several times.

Leah’s nun costume made me laugh pretty hard, the saying on her hat in particular…

halloween

Hehe.

And here are the boys!

From left: ghost-faced Andrew, Mario, Papa Smurf, Polkaroo (best costume ever, haha!), Coach Dugan from A League of Their Own, Priest.

There ended up being prizes for best costume, and guess who won for the females?!

Me! I am not sure how this happened, since seriously no one knew who I was until I told them, but I’ll take it. This means I got a medal (from the 5k) and a trophy in the same day! I think I am going to have to start a trophy room in our house.

Polkaroo won for the boys, and that was definitely who I voted for. His costume killed me (Polkaroo is from a Canadian kids’ TV show in the 80s, so you may not get that reference if you are not from around here or are not around our age).

(The real Polkaroo)

Yesterday I was not feeling well at all (I assumed it was from Saturday night, but I am feeling even worse today so I’m not sure what’s going on), so I took it easy and had a bit of a scary movie marathon. I watched Paranormal Activity 2 and Scream 4. I thought Scream 4 was awful, and about halfway through I actually fast forwarded to the end just to see who the killer was. Maybe I needed to be watching it with people to get more into it.

I did really like Paranormal Activity 2 though. Ghosts have always been what scare me the most, and ghost stories are my favourite kind of scary stories. I am excited to see the third one now.

Welp, I am off to hopefully feel better. I see a lot of soup in my near future.

I hope you all have a great Halloween filled with yummy treats and funny tricks.

  • What did you dress as for Halloween?
  • Did you do anything to celebrate Halloween, or are you tonight?

Funny Search Terms, Halloween Edition

Good evening!

Some of your comments on my post yesterday really made me laugh. Most people seem to have an experience randomly waking up in the middle of the night and starting to get ready for work/school, only to realize they are hours too early.

And I completely agree that waking up in the middle of the night and noticing that you have hours left before the alarm goes off is one of the best feelings in the world. But waking up and noticing you have two minutes before your alarm goes off is definitely one of the worst.

Halloween Search Terms

Fellow bloggers, have you noticed that the google search terms leading people to your blog change with the seasons?

I have been noticing lately that an increasing amount of people are ending up on my blog after searching for Halloween related things (I guess probably because I have been talking about Halloween-y stuff lately).

Many are getting here after searching for Barbie and Ken costumes and Paper Bag Princess costumes, which makes sense. But, as we all know, some people are really weird, so some of the search terms are a little more…interesting…

I thought I would do a funny search terms, Halloween edition!

Funny Frankenstein

Well I just googled this myself and I found Frankenstein’s that are a lot more funny than what you’d find on Happy or Hungry.

Oh, fine.

You’re welcome.

Batman Pita

Umm…?

I don’t get it.

PITA BATMAN

Yeah, the same thing just reversed.

Nope, I still don’t get it.

Lazy Vampire Costume

Throw on a pair of fangs and a cape. Done.

Thanks for dropping by though.

COSTUME THANGS

Not sure about this. Maybe…

Is that helpful for someone who is searching for “costume thangs”?

What is the funniest Halloween-themed search that has landed someone on your blog lately?

Costumes of Halloween’s Past

Hello friends!

So probably you guys are pretty aware that Halloween is coming up…

I am a HUGE fan of Halloween, mostly because of the candy, costumes, and parties. I was always big into dressing up and making my own costumes, or enlisting the help of my mom to make them.

Halloween Circa Grade 5

I was seriously cool, I am aware. So are stirrup pants.

For the past three years our good friends Shane and Candis hosted a pretty awesome Halloween party, complete with crazy decorations and prizes for best costume.

The first year (2008) I was pretty lazy in the costume department.

Ando and I were vampires, and that was definitely a game-day decision. I’m pretty sure we were at Value Village that day looking for stuff to complete our costumes (pretty sweet cape though!).

Alejandrew took his vampire role very seriously.

He was scary.

The next year I vowed not to leave my costume until the last minute, and I started planning it at the end of August. It was probably my favourite couples’ costume of ours. Can you guess who we are?

Barbie and Ken!!!

That was probably my favourite Halloween year. The party was so much fun. Everyone had awesome costumes, and the night got a little crazy.

Good Times

The Ladies

Check out Amy Winehouse! Her costume was one of the best, for sure.

And last year Andy-pants and I did our own thing, no couples costumes going on. I was the Paper Bag Princess, and he was a sumo wrestler.

Sumo Wrestler & the Paper Bag Princess

His costume killed me. Mainly because of how bowl-legged his costume made him look.

Big Ol' Bowl Legs

I couldn’t not laugh whenever I looked at those legs.

Andy's Legulars

(Edit: It’s bow-legged isn’t it? I don’t care, I’m leaving it. Bowl-legged sounds more funny.)

The Paper Bag Princess is a popular Robert Munsch book character, so here is a picture of the actual Paper Bag Princess if you are unsure of what I was going for.

One of my very fave children’s books!

I used those brown yard waste bags from Home Depot for my costume, and just stapled the crap out of it. I also stapled myself into it, so every time I went to the bathroom I had to do a big re-staple, which got a bit annoying.

Sadly though, as the evening wore on my skirt started to rip…

Rippage

Until it eventually ripped in half and I had to tear it off and was only clad in leggings.

And this year…I don’t know what to be! All year long I had an idea in my mind, but I have left it to the last minute and now I don’t think it will work out. I definitely still want to do this costume (which is why I’m being cryptic – can’t tell ya, you might steal my idea! ;) ), so I don’t want to do a crappy version of it.

I may do Barbie again and save my good idea for next year. We are going to a different party (sad about this!) so hopefully not many people have seen it.

Eat Time

Onto eats!

My dinner tonight was inspired by my good friend Melissa!

Quinoa Shrimp Goodness

She wrote a comment on my shrimp and quinoa stir fry post saying she was trying quinoa for the first time tonight and making this recipe! (the recipe was actually originally my friend Dawn’s.)

Coincidentally I had frozen shrimp thawing in my fridge that I wasn’t sure what to do with, so as soon as I read her comment I was like BAM! That’s what I’m having.

I made a minor change to the recipe and swapped red pepper for sundried tomatoes, as I am not reallllly the biggest fan of sundried tomatoes and find them to be pretty oily.

Closeup of Deliciousness

Lunch was basically last night’s dinner, and breakfast was oatmeal with peanut butter and honey. I took a pic, but honestly it looks so disgusting there’s no point in posting it. The oatmeal was so good though. I kind of stayed away from oatmeal for the past few months but I think it will be making a huge reappearance in my breakfasts. I do love it so much.

Questions of the Evening

  • Are you dressing up for Halloween?
  • What is your costume?
