Cookie Dough…Cereal?

I had a bit of extra time this a.m. because I’m working from home today and am eliminating my commute (and shower, shh). I have to get my organization’s magazine finished this week, and I tend to make more progress on it when I do it from home (I don’t check my email, no phone calls, no people dropping by my office to distract me, etc.) so my plan is to just nose to the grindstone that baby all day long and hopefully get ‘er done! Or most of it, anyway.

For this morning’s breakfast I decided to try out a recipe I’ve been eying for a while on The Fitnessista’s blogcookie dough cereal!

Cookie Dough Cereal

I have been wanting to make this since I started my blog, but it calls for protein powder so I’ve held off. I am totally a protein powder newbie, and have never bought it before (it’s expensive!). I am thinking of purchasing my first container, and NOT because I want to bulk up (a common myth, I think), but to add it into my breakfasts and smoothies to keep me full longer, boost my immune system, and hopefully speed up my metabolism.

I am going the whey way, but I am still researching on what brand of protein powder to buy (any suggestions are welcome!). In the meantime, my friend Shane gave me a packet of this to try out on the weekend…

Protein Action

And since the flavour is cookies ‘n’ cream, I thought it would be perfect for the cookie dough cereal.

Here are the directions, taken from The Fitnessista:

Cookie Dough Cereal

1. In a bowl, add 1/3-1/2 C oats, 1/2 scoop protein powder of choice, cinnamon, pinch of sea salt, a little vanilla extract and some Stevia or sweetener of choice (I used a teaspoon of brown sugar)

2. Mix well to combine. Add 1-2 T of your favourite nut butter (I used peanut butter) and using a spoon, break up and stir until mixture resembles crumbly cookie dough.

3. Top with at least 1 cup milk of choice (I used almond milk), and then add your toppings. The Fitnessista says to get crazy with your toppings! You can add virtually anything. I chose to add a mashed banana and some raspberries.

Cookie Dough Cereal

This was surprisingly good, and SO filling! The texture was a bit different than what I’m used to for breakfast, so the first couple of bites were weird for me, but after I got over that it truly did taste like cookie dough! Not too shabby, and I’ll for sure make it again once I get my hands on some protein powda!

I felt like there may have been too much milk though, it was pretty runny…but what do I know?

Question of the morning: Do you use protein powder as a supplement? Do you have a favourite kind?
