Food Talk Friday

I got a pretty disturbing comment about that Vietnamese soup I wrote about on Wednesday.

soup (1)

Screen Shot 2013-05-30 at 7.57.07 PM

Sounds like weird lunch meat was the least of my worries. I probably ate congealed blood and pig’s knuckles. There were a lot of weird mystery items in that soup. When I read this comment to Evan he said “Yeah, now that you mention it, I remember you struggling with some kind of cartilage-type thing.” Welp. Pig knuckles! A hoof, basically. I may have eaten a hoof.

I feel like if you are going to include weird ingredients in your menu items, those weird ingredients need to be listed on your menu. Maybe that’s just me, I don’t know. Normally if I am at a restaurant that is outside of my culinary boundaries culturally, I just eat without asking questions because I am afraid of the answer. What’s in that sushi? Oh, octopus testicles? Fabulous. Didn’t need to know that.

I think those days may be over for me now. Now I feel like I need to know. If there’s blood in my soup (congealed  blood), I’d like to know. Ah well, all good, just a life experience.

Anyway, moving onto more delicious things. I went to Evan’s house after work on Wednesday and when I got there he was roasting a chicken for dinner.

dinner-spread

So for dinner we had an entire chicken, stuffing (stove top but I’ll take it), gravy, and Brotherman’s slaw. What is this, Thanksgiving?!

dinner

Nope, just another day at their pad. This is not even for my benefit, I promise. They are constantly cooking these elaborate dinners. And breakfasts. This is what they made me for breakfast yesterday.

breakfast

A frittata with a bunch of vegetables, ham, and a chocolate chip waffle.

No lie, this is an every day thing. Here are two other breakfasts I have enjoyed there lately:

egg-steak

STEAK and eggs.

eggs-perogies

PEROGIES and eggs.

No one has ever cooked for me like this before. I don’t even know how to express my gratitude. I guess blog about it.

They also just got a juicer, so my breakfast yesterday was followed by juice with mango, orange, and grapefruit.

juice

It tasted like Florida!

On Wednesday evening I was talking to Dawn on the phone for a while in another room, and Evan came in and surprised me with a glass of carrot, apple, orange, and ginger juice, instructed me to take a giant sip of it, and then poured wine into it to top it off. I can’t even explain my reaction to that. I thought I was dreaming.

So anyway, don’t blame me if I move in there. Winnie cooks me jack squat over here.

winnie

Yeah, but your love isn’t edible Winnie.

I am going away for the weekend, and though I am excited about leaving the city, I am a little bit sad because it’s a huge food weekend in Toronto and I am going to miss it.

First of all there’s the first annual Halal Food Festival at the International Centre, which according to the website is two days of food in seven festival areas and 60 food sampling stations. Oh, and there’s a cheese seminar. I’m really sad to miss that especially.

And Sunday is Burger Day. All-you-can-eat sliders, various kinds, from 67 restaurants, for $30. It’s at Artscape Wychwood Barns.

It’s a good weekend to be a Torontonian. If you go to either of those events, please tell me how they are. I want details!

Have a great weekend! Eat lots! But stay away from the pig knuckles. The congealed blood also.

Bobby the Raver

I have the day off work today because of the celebration for my little high school closing, so I was very, very excited to sleep in. This week has been stupidly busy and there’s been something going on every night and I haven’t been getting the most sleep. I thought for sure I would be able to sleep until 9, no problem.

But nope, plans were foiled. The balconies in my building are being redone, so at 7:32 this morning I was woken abruptly to the sweet sound of a jackhammer outside my window. An actual jackhammer, and yes, at 7:30. Are you even allowed to start work before 9 on weekdays? I thought there was a rule about that. Normally this wouldn’t matter and I’d already be awake for work, but this morning I was not a happy camper about it. I feel sorry for people who do not work during the day. This is going to put a damper on a lot of leisuring in my building.

So I can’t use my balcony now for probably the whole summer. My door is nailed in from the outside as I might wander out there and fall to my death.

balcony

But I’m sad. I very much like my balcony. At least it will look nice for the winter.

In other news it was my dad’s 62nd birthday on Wednesday, so after work Evan and I drove over to their place for a barbecue. It took us almost two hours to get there because of the beautiful Toronto traffic. That shouldn’t be news to me as I used to commute from around there to Toronto every day for work, and each way took me at least an hour because of traffic. But now that I am in the city that is soo farrrrrrrr. I now understand why people who live in Toronto don’t leave the city. Vair annoying.

Anyway, barbecue. We had burgers and my stepmom Mona had every condiment imaginable laid out and ready for us.

condiments

I think I love burgers for the condiments. I loaded them all on there.

burger

First barbecued burger of the year and it was fabulous.

And there was also cake for Bobby’s birthday.

dad-cake

62 years young!

The cake was vanilla and strawberry with whipped cream and it was delicious.

cake

Mona always finds the best cakes!

I know what my dad likes and that is the Montreal Canadians, so my gifts to him are usually of that nature. I got him a very nice Montreal Canadians clock that he can add to his collection. But I think his favourite present was this leather fanny pack:

dad-fannypack

Or maybe the beer. But when he opened the fanny pack and realized what it was he exclaimed “AlRIIIIIIIIIIIGHT!” very excitedly. I am looking forward to my retirement and the days where I get ridiculously excited over a fanny pack. Mona said it was necessary because his keys and wallet keep falling out of his sweatpants (again, to be retired…) so he needed somewhere to keep them. Bam, fanny pack. Very handy and practical.

I also need to take a moment to address my dad’s shirt, because it has a story behind it. My dad plays the keyboards, quite well actually (just ask Dawn her favourite song), and a couple years ago Roland was having a contest where you could create your own digital song and send it in. If your song was chosen as the best digital song, you would win a keyboard, and also tickets to some rave party in Montreal, where they would play your song. Of course my dad entered. He wanted that keyboard. He recorded his song and I helped him make it into an mp3 and sent it in for him. He did not win, sadly, but he did get that sweet shirt out of it.

It makes me laugh very hard thinking about if he did win, because my 60-year-old father would be attending a rave.

tumblr_lxza5011No1r7ncwao1_500

I’m sure he would have enjoyed himself.

I guess this is nothing new, because my dad used to store this old trailer we had at Trudeau Park in Tweed where the World Electronic Music Festival took place, and one day he was there during it so he just went to the festival on his own. He said he made friends. Bobby’s a fun guy.

Anyway, that’s all I got today. Have a great weekend!

The Perfect Taco Salad

Hey, do you guys like taco salad?

Of course you do. Everyone likes taco salad.

Well I discovered a nifty tool to make your homemade taco salads more easy and delicious.

molds

Taco salad molds. I probably shouldn’t take credit for their discovery though. Evan and his brother actually found them at Walmart. And possibly I’m late getting on this taco mold bandwagon and everyone already knows about them, but when I saw them my mind was blown.

Anyway, you just stick regular (flour, whole wheat, corn, etc.) tortillas in the little molds.

taco-bowls

And then put them in the oven for about 10 minutes. Done. Perfect, crispy taco shell goodness.

taco-bowl

And then you just fill those badboys up with all your favourite taco stuff. In my case ground beef, lettuce, tomato, cheese, salsa, sour cream, and cilantro.

taco-salad

Multiple times. You can just keep refilling. And then you eat the bowl.

GENIUS. No more boring taco salads for me!

PS – Sorry for the lame post about taco molds. It’s Friday and my brain hurts. Also, I’m addicted to Mad Men now and have been watching them all since season two for the past month or so, and it’s eating into my blogging time. And I started a new job this week, which has also been taking up brain power. But more on that next week!

Have a great weekend!

Brotherman’s Slaw

I have been staying at Evan’s house during the week quite a bit in the past couple of weeks, and this has meant one very awesome thing… Gourmet dinners.

steak

I can get down with that. By the way, that cucumber salad features my very favourite oil and vinegar dressing, just like my Nana’s. And I do mean just like my Nana’s. Evan’s tastes exactly like hers. I can’t even do that!

Evan and his brother (aka Brotherman) have a condo together and enjoy cooking dinner together in the evenings. I am very impressed by this. I am impressed that they not only enjoy cooking, but also that they carve out time in their busy evening to actually put effort into cooking. Evan and Brotherman typically arrive home from work around 6:30 or 7, and then do their dinner thing, and they aren’t even lazy about it. Dinner usually features some kind of meat, beans/rice and vegetables, and a salad. But Evan has also been known to make some pretty amazing curried rice concoctions, minestra, and other delicious things (they are really big on breakfast also).

I used to make more elaborate dinners pretty frequently, but now that I’m just cooking for myself I’m lazy about it. When I arrive home from work in the evening I’m all about the quick and dirty. English muffin pizza is a pretty big staple up in here. So sign me up for steak, any time. I really enjoy that they make their mealtimes into more of an affair, and they are inspiring me!

One thing in particular that has been inspiring me is Brotherman’s amazing coleslaw.

pork

Pork tenderloin, broccoli and bok choy, slaw

I didn’t even think I liked coleslaw, but it turns out I do. I like it quite a lot. I think maybe I just wasn’t eating it properly before (and also I associate coleslaw with KFC’s neon green weirdness).

Since I like Brotherman’s coleslaw so much I got all the deets on it so I can make it myself. And Brotherman is letting me share his secret slaw recipe with all of you!

Here are the ingredients to Brotherman’s slaw.

ingredients

Cabbage, onion, mayonnaise, rice vinegar, sesame oil, sugar, salt and chipotle hot sauce are Brotherman’s staples, but sometimes he likes to add apple to mix it up.

First you slice your veggies…

onion

They just got a mandolin for this, but before that they would just slice the onion and cabbage by hand very thin.

cole-slaw

Then you add in the rest of your ingredients. Brotherman does not measure, but this is what he says he does:

- Couple dashes of rice vinegar (you could use regular vinegar also)
- Drizzle of sesame oil
- Spoonful of mayo
- Sprinkle of sugar
- Pinch of salt
- Couple shots of chipotle hot sauce (optional, and any hot sauce will work, but chipotle does give it a great flavour)

mayo

Once all your ingredients are in your bowl, mix it all up with your hands. Brotherman says using your hands adds flavour (my Nana used to say this also, so while that’s kind of a gross notion I think it’s legit).

And then you have your slaw. BAM.

pork-chop

It’s good stuff. I honestly can’t get enough of it, and this is coming from a non-coleslaw fan.

If you make it and love it, you can thank Brotherman.

brotherman

Sometimes I like to tell him he looks like Robin Hood.

Also, Evan and Brotherman tend to have really good snacks kicking around. Like this:

giant-reese
Just to give you a size reference…

pb-cup

Legit half pound cup right there. Bigger than the palm of my hand! Biggest Reese PB Cup I’ve ever seen. I know this girl would be impressed. Don’t worry, I shared it. But yep, it’s a good time at Evan and Brotherman’s house.

PS: This is totally unrelated, but I have updated my Cartoon Stories page. I was missing a bunch of my more recent ones, so they are now all there. And yes I am still working on one! Should be done early next week.

Echo Sushi. Do It.

On Sunday evening my never-ending cold was kind enough to take a break for a few hours, and my stuffy nose subsided enough for me to actually be able to taste and smell things again. Hurrah! This meant I would be able to enjoy my dinner, so I wanted to take full advantage. Not that not being able to taste things was stopping me from eating, because it was not. No lack of appetite over here. If anything when I am sick I want to eat more, and worse foods.

Ron-Swanson-Says-Dont-Even-Care

I don’t.

Anyway, Evan and I originally set out for Mexican, but as we were walking to the restaurant we passed this:

echo-sushi

Echo Sushi, located on Yonge between Eglinton and Davisville. I was researching Toronto sushi restaurants recently and I kept stumbling across reviews for this place that said it was one of the best AYCE sushi restaurants in Toronto. So as soon as I saw it, that was that. S’laters Mexican, sushi time.

I have been to many, many AYCE sushi places over the years and I find most of them to be pretty mediocre. Kakemono, Makimono, Sushimono…same-old. It’s sushi and it’s good and it hits the spot, but I haven’t been to many AYCE places that have really stood out to me. So I don’t know if it was the return of my tastebuds or maybe the fact that I was slightly hungover or if it really is one of the best AYCE sushi places in Toronto, but this sushi was DYNAMITE. It was definitely the best AYCE sushi I can ever remember having. Also, the menu was extensive, and the service was speedy. Maybe we went on a good day, but zero complaints here about Echo Sushi.

We ordered quite a lot (as is typical for me at AYCE sushi restaurants, but who doesn’t go crazy?).

spread

Miso soup, beef and chicken teriyaki and beef skewers, calimari (SO GOOD), sushi/sashimi.

sushi-sashimi

Possibly the freshest salmon sashimi I have ever had, and I love love loved the shrimp sushi.

Shrimp and mixed vegetable tempura (loooove tempuraaaa) and deep fried scallops…

tempura

And rolls. Lots of rolls. There were so many rolls on the menu, and some I had never even heard of before.

rolls

And they had a really good selection of brown rice rolls also, which I don’t think I have ever seen at an AYCE sushi place.

brown-rice-sushi
The rolls with cream cheese in them may just be my favourite. I can’t get enough of them.

It was a struggle to eat everything, I cannot lie. And there were a couple of rolls that I really had to force down. But we made it. And you betcha we had room for dessert…

deep-fried-banana

That would be a deep fried banana smothered in chocolate sauce with vanilla ice cream. Yumballs and a half.

So if you’re looking for a decent sushi restaurant in midtown Toronto, Echo Sushi! It’s good stuff.

PSA: We didn’t just eat crap

I had a couple of very concerned comments on my first Florida post thinking that maybe we were just going to eat at all the buffets and fast food restaurants and call it a day without trying any of the good food.

Of course not! Not to worry, we didn’t just eat crap! Yes, we did eat a lot of crap, but we had to because of the novelty of it. We just don’t have anything like those places in Canada. We have the Mandarin, a Chinese buffet, but dinner is almost $30 a person. A far cry from Hungry Howie’s $6.99 special. But we ate at better places than Hungry Howie’s, IHOP, and Checkers. Oh right, and the Golden Corral… I’m not even going to talk about that because my Golden Corral plate is just an embarrassing disgusting mess of random items.

Anyway, we ate at a few nice places, so let’s talk about those.

Our first decent meal was at the Anna Maria Oyster Bar in Bradenton.

anna-maria-oyster-bar-bradenton-fl

It was my first Florida seafood experience and I loved it. They also had paper towels hanging above each table, just in case things got messy.

paper-towel-table

It’s gonna get messy

And this was a good thing, as things tend to get messy for me.

Neither of us are big fans of oysters, so we started with the mussels.

mussels

Hands down the best mussels I have ever had. The sauce they came in was so ridiculously good that Evan and I ordered bread just so we could dip it in the sauce. It was all garlicky and parmesan-y and I couldn’t get enough of it. I also loved the addition of tomatoes in there. I just can’t say enough about the mussels.

For my entree I ordered the pasta skillet with scallops. Which came with more bread. Delicious garlic bread.

scallop-pasta

carrrrrrrbs

I was really sold on the pasta because of the Anna Maria Island sauce that was described on the menu. Typically I really prefer tomato sauce over oil or cream sauces, but when I read that it was a blend of tomatoes, artichoke hearts, basil, wine, and herb butter I just couldn’t say no. It was really good, especially the scallops, just melt-in-your-mouth good. But after all the mussels and all the bread I was pretty full so I ended up taking a lot of it home.

I also had a rum punch as it was on special.

rum-punch

But just one, as those are dangerous for me.

Our next delicious dining experience was at Pop’s Sunset Grill at Nokomis Beach.

pops

We went there after a full day on Venice and Nokomis beaches, so don’t be judging my scraggly hair and shiny skin. I was swimming in that glorious ocean!

I really loved that they had outdoor seating right on the water, because patios are something I really love about Ontario and I noticed was lacking in Florida. I just love sitting outside, but I noticed most of the restaurants in Florida were indoor. Maybe because it just gets too hot to sit outside? I don’t know. I never realized how much of a patio culture Ontario had though until I visited here (in the summer, obviously we’re not crazy enough to patio it up in the winter).

Anyway, it was great to sit on the water and watch all the boats go by and be jealous of them.

evan-pops

Evan’s Florida shirt killed me.

We had already had quite a lot of snacks throughout the day so we skipped appetizers and just went for the main course. And oh man is all I have to say about the main course.

evan-seafood

Whaaaat

We got the full steamship pot for two, which included 24 shrimp, two lobster tails, red potatoes, corn on the cob, onions and celery. Amazing.

seafood-pot

I LOVED the fresh seafood. There was so much of it, and it was pretty inexpensive also. The lobster was sooo good.

Our server told me they had the best pina coladas in the world also, so I obviously had to try one of those.

pina-colada

I promise I am not wincing, I am just squinting from the sun. It was a good pina. Perhaps the best in the world, but I am not really a pina colada connoisseur so I cannot say for sure.

Dining experience #3 takes us to The Hub Baja-Grill, just outside of Siesta Key Beach in Sarasota, where we had spent the day leisuring on the sand and swimming in the ocean.

the-hub

I look really excited about it, but really I was just excited for food.

Evan and I started with the nacho dip sampler, which came with salsa, guacamole, and cheese con queso.

nachos

I loved the dips! The guacamole was so good both Evan and I commented that it would have won the Guac-Off!

Margaritas were on special here, and our server really recommended them, so that’s what I went with.

margarita

No disappointment here.

Pints of beer were only $3 until the end of happy hour (again unheard of in Ontario), so that’s what Evan stuck to.

evan

I ended up switching to beer after my margarita.

It was a really cute restaurant and I loved where we were sitting. Our table was on the patio just off the street, so it was perfect for people watching.

And we were also really close to the live entertainment.

albert-donadi

That guy was really good actually. I was impressed.

For my main course I decided to go for tacos, because I LOVE tacos.

tacos

But I have to be honest and say they were only okay. Someone in the kitchen got a little excited with the taco seasoning and I felt like the meat was noticeably too seasoned. Otherwise good though.

I tried some of Evan’s fish tacos and I liked them much better!

fish-tacos
I had the meal envy going on for sure.

I just wanna talk about breakfast quickly now. Paula really recommended Cracker Barrel, and we had also both never tried it, so we went there twice for breakfast.

cracker-barrel

Twice because I could barely eat the first time since it was after our first night out with Paula and I was not feeling the most fab.

It should be noted that this was my first time trying grits, and they were not nearly as bad as I thought they were going to be. Same with the biscuits and country gravy. Well not the biscuits, those were obviously going to be delicious, but that country gravy always creeped me out a bit. But I liked it a lot. I also liked the apple butter a lot, which is in the bowl on the plate with the biscuits and country gravy. I’m sad we don’t have Cracker Barrel in Canada. I didn’t even know what I was missing.

So see, we didn’t eat horribly the entire time. Some decent meals definitely went down. I think my favourite was the steamship seafood pot. I wish I was still eating  that right now!
