Cold Weather Running

Welp, these days are pretty much over…

I don’t think I’ll be running outside in tanks again until the spring!

Yesterday after work I headed outside for a 5k run, and it was pretty darn chilly. The temperature was about 6 degrees C, and though I was comfortable with a light jacket, I know that pesky colder weather is on its way. This morning while I was driving to work I noticed the temperature was hovering around 0. Eep.

I am not sure how much longer I’ll continue to run outside. It kills me to say this, but it may be treadmill time.

Running in the snow? That seems a little too hardcore for me… I am really in awe of winter runners.

Is anyone reading a winter runner? And do you have any tips for newbie winter runners? Like how to not hate it and also avoid frostbite?

It’s starting to get darker earlier also, which is always a bummer. I don’t mind running in my neighbourhood in the dark, but I do mind getting out of my comfy warm bed at 5:30 am and forcing myself out into the cold. It’s hard to remember how good you will feel after your run when you know you are about to freeze your loins (and nungas) off.

Last year I ran outside until about mid-November, and then I started hitting up this beast.

Silly treadmill.

Yesterday I did actually really enjoy running in the cooler weather though. I didn’t get too hot and I found it a lot easier to breathe, except my nose was so runny! I constantly had to wipe it with my sleeve. So gross. I’m sure I looked attractive while doing this.

I also made myself a new playlist, which kept me pretty pumped up. And just FYI, to keep me excited about running, I will try not to listen to any of the songs on my running playlist unless I am actually running. This helps me to look forward to my run, because I am excited to jam out to my playlist. Not a bad idea, oui?

I’ll add this to my Playlists page as well, but here it is if you are interested (if you click on the song title it will take you tot he song’s YouTube vid):

Cheers (Drink To That) – Rihanna
Color On The Walls (Don’t Stop) – Foster The People
Days Are Forgotten – Kasabian
I Like How It Feels – Enrique Iglesias ft. Pitbull
I Wanna Go – Britney Spears
Moves Like Jagger – Maroon 5 ft. Christina Aguilera
Reaction โ€“ Acres Of Lions (still loving this song)
Sexy And I Know It – LMFAO (Ohhh this video!!!! Kills me every time!)
Stereo Hearts – Gym Class Heroes ft. Adam Levine (highlight ;))
You Make Me Feel… – Cobra Starship

Food Stuff

So I’ve been really slacking at posting food stuff this week, but to be honest I’ve been really busy with work and I’ve been eating boring and repeat foods and I don’t really know what to say about them.

For example, for breakfast every day this week I have eaten either oatmeal with peanut butter and banana, or a whole wheat bagel with peanut butter and banana. Healthy and yummy, yes and yes, but boring and repetitive? Yes…

I love talking about food when the dish I have made is the meat of my blog post, but I don’t really like throwing it in as an afterthought, like “oh and by the way, here is what I ate today, since I have kind of identified myself as a food blogger and feel obligated to post this.”

That leaves me with a funny taste in my mouth, and I feel like it’s obvious when I do that. It also makes me less excited about blogging (obligation will do that to ya).

I like to give food the attention it deserves, but I also want to talk about the things that I want to talk about, ya know?

Sorry to be all ranty-pants, and I don’t know if anything will be changing around here. Just something I have been thinking about..

Anyway, cheers to the freakin’ weekend! I hope you are all dressing up and gallivanting around your cities! I’m pretty excited for Halloween festivities ;).

Enjoy your Friday!

  1. I love running outside when it’s cooler, but running in the freezing cold is not my idea of fun. Anything below 50 and I’m probably staying indoors!

By the way – I love your drawings!! I’ve been away from blog reading, but I need to catch up on the happenings in your blog. Gives me something to do to pass the time this afternoon ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. Cheers for sure! Love your treadmill cartoon up there! ๐Ÿ™‚

Running outside in the winter: gloves, hat or headband, some kind of scarf or neck wrap that you can pull up over your chin/nose if it’s really windy, and running tights. Then, layer layer layer when it gets really cold. I just got a couple of Under Armour cold gear tops and they keep me really toasty. Oh, and if you take Mucinex before you run, your nose will run less. It won’t NOT run, but it does help.

If you need extra motivation just think about what a badass you’ll feel like when you finish a run outside in the winter. (Best feeling!)

    • Thank you, those tips are great! And, um…a little overwhelming. But that is a really good call, I already feel like a big badass when I finish a run, so I can’t even imagine. I’ll probably feel UNSTOPPABLE!

  3. I don’t think I’ll ever post a picture of oatmeal on my blog again. Normally, my meals are all repeats and I think I ate that soup for a month straight, so I would literally be posting the same pictures everyday.
There is much, much more interesting content than food. I feel very voyeuristic when I see what everyone eats on a daily basis!
Having said that, I get a lot of amazing recipes from blogs and sometimes I just like looking at food porn. Yeah. Food porn.
Life blogging seems so much more fun than having the obligation to take pictures of what you’re eating! Most of the time I am halfway through my meal and think, “oh… should I have taken a photo of it when it looked pretty and not massacred in my mouth?” Er.. No.
And the treadmill kills me. It’s probably my least favourite exercise apparatus ever. I have no tips for running outside, because I am the one snuggling in a blanket and not even looking outside during winter. I’m going to focus more on workout tapes and hot yoga classes.
I got a little rant-y too. Looks like it’s kind of a hot topic!

  4. I’m in the same boat, I am also trying to get over my fear of running in the cold. I’ve used the same earband for years now, so maybe if I get a cute one with new gloves I’ll be inspired to wear them outdoors? (Wishful thinking). Also, I should do the same as you – not listen to my awesome playlist until I’m actually running so I can look forward to some tunes. Thanks for your list as well, I’ll need a new music rotation!

  5. I enjoy blogging much more now that I’ve stopped trying to force myself into a category. When I was trying to be a “healthy living blogger”, my posts felt forced and boring. I also found that – for me as a writer – “what I did today” just wasn’t meeting my needs. Now I just write about whatever I want. I eat every day, but I certainly don’t post food every day. I do find that my readership has changed a bit, but for the better, since I now read a wider variety of different blogs. I still love reading HLBs; it just turns out that I didn’t love writing one. I think that unless you want your blog to be a money-maker, then there’s no need to feel locked into a category or even a schedule. For people who want to make money from blogging, this might be different. I am not one of those people, nor do I ever expect to be, so being more flexible works for me.

(And as always, I love your illustration! That’s how I feel whenever I run at all, regardless of whether it’s outside or on a machine. Ha!)

    • This is very true. I want to write the blog that I would want to read, and reading about food all the time does bore me, even though I love food. This is very good advice. It is so hard sometimes to write just for yourself and not what you think everyone wants to read. I don’t think I am cut out to be a typical HLB, but I am still discovering my own blog voice.

  6. Running in the cold makes it sooo hard to breath. I definitely stick to a treadmill during the winter.

  7. No need to apologize for your content…post what you feel! And I like your “saving for running” playlist idea. As for winter running, my tips: get a good warm pair of running pants (I have some Nikes that I love), headband to cover your ears (I find that hats make me too hot), and don’t forget warm gloves…but don’t go too warm, it’s surprisingly easy to overheat. I like a long running shirt and a jacket, nothing more. Above all, be careful and watch where you’re going! And don’t be concerned with how you look…trust me, I’m a (cold) hot mess when I get done a winter run!

  8. I cannot run outside in the winter…it’s just too cold. And don’t ever feel the need to talk about your food! If you don’t have anything to say then don’t try to force it! Love your treadmill illustration :).

  9. I have never tried peanut butter and banana together – you can get up off the floor now. I don’t know why I haven’t tried it because I know how much you love it and I loved peanut butter and I love bananas, but putting them together??? I am having lunch soon so maybe, just maybe I’ll try that combination.

I think that the Batman and Pita is Batleb???? There is a batman cartoon on YouTube called Batleb and Batman’s secret weapon is extra garlic sauce which he gets from his kebab. It’s good for a laugh, here’s the link if you want to check it out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q7sb8r5e6eE There is a reference to the West Coast Eagles which is an AFL (football) team.

  10. I ran one winter. It was pretty cold and treacherous (running on ice and all). At the time I was working at a running store so I had people to run with which made it easier. I feel like it’s almost a must as it’s really hard to send yourself out there at -30. But just like anything, once you get into a habit, you just do it. I decided that it wasn’t worth it though and I just stuck to other things in the winter. If you do get down with the winter running, you wipe your nose with your gloves a lot (so lots of glove washing) and you invest in a neck warmer/balaclava for your chin and neck (this is the worst when it’s cold).
Moves like Jagger is the most addictive song!
I lIke when you talk about more than food. It makes things more interesting and fun to read.
